$32,500 In Hospitality Scholarships Awarded

In July 2014, the Bermuda Hospitality Institute joined with global cruise vacation company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. in awarding $32,500 in scholarships to eight young Bermudians who are embarking on hospitality careers.

Bermuda Hospitality Institute Executive Director Malika Musson, and Acting Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Patricia Gordon-Pamplin were on hand to present the awards, which took place on at L’Eau Bar at Newstead.

This year’s students were:

Eron Woods – Studying at Johnson & Wales University North Carolina; has received an award of $5,000 to assist him in obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts and Food Service Management.

Sajni Richardson – Also attending Johnson & Wales University, she has been awarded a scholarship in the amount of $5,000. She will continue a course of study toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management.

Taryn Burgess – Entering her final year at Johnson & Wales North Miami campus, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports, Entertainment and Event Management. She too received an award of $5,000.

Nikhil Hassell – Completing his final year at Johnson & Wales University pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Food and Beverage Management. He was presented with a scholarship for $5,000.

Zakiyah Adams – Studying Received $3,500 for Tourism & Hospitality studies at Mount St. Vincent University.

Simon Benevides – Pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce Tourism Management at the University of Guelph, he received an award of $3,500.

Dawayne Fubler – Studying Applied Business Hospitality Management at the Niagara College; he was awarded $3,500.

Ramsay Saggar – Was awarded a $2,000 scholarship for his Hospitality Management studies at Niagara College.

Ms. Musson congratulated all the students, and reiterated the Hospitality Institute’s commitment in continuing to support those seeking tourism-related careers.

She said, “The future of hospitality and tourism lies with our youth, and the Hospitality Institute is seriously committed to doing its part to develop the future leaders of the tourism industry. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. for its significant contribution and the support that it continues to provide.”

Minister Gordon-Pamplin’s full statement follows below:

Good morning ladies and gentlemen.

I am very pleased to be here today as we celebrate the success and accomplishments of eight [8] Bermudians who have chosen to pursue a career in the hospitality industry.

Indeed, these young people are to be celebrated on being the recipients of the 2014 Bermuda Hospitality & Tourism Studies Scholarships. This wonderful achievement is a testament of their personal effort and commitment.

Through the generosity of one of our most respected and valued tourism partners – Royal Caribbean International [RCI], this scholarship is a tremendous support to these students in furthering their studies in tourism related fields.

This Government is committed to the future of Bermuda tourism and we believe that that future lies with our young talent here at home. The Bermuda Department of Tourism Development will continue to do its part to develop and support these future leaders because we take that role very seriously.

The 2014 Bermuda Hospitality & Tourism Studies Scholarship is an annual award, courtesy of the Royal Caribbean International Cruise Line and is managed by the Bermuda Hospitality Institute. This is an initiative that has been in existence for many years we are very proud to be associated with it as it has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds to almost 100 young Bermudians to assist them in tourism related studies.

Today I am pleased to join with Royal Caribbean International in awarding eight, very deserving young Bermudians with scholarships:

  • Zakiya Adams – Who will be attending Mount St. Vincent University [$3,500].
  • Eron Woods – Who will be attending Johnson & Wales University [$5,000]
  • Taryn Burgess-Aming – Who will be attending Johnson & Wales University [$5,000].
  • Dwayne Fubler – Who will be attending Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology [$3,500].
  • Nikhil Hassell – Who will be attending Johnson & Wales University [$5,000].
  • Sajni Richardson – Who will be attending Johnson & Wales University [$5,000].
  • Ramsay Saggar – Who will be attending Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology [$2,000]; and
  • Simon Benevides – Who will be attending the University of Guelph [$3,500].

Today, on behalf of RCI and the Ministry of Tourism Development and Transport, we are very pleased to present you all with a combined total of $32,500 in scholarship funds.

Congratulations to each of you on your achievements.

I wish you all the very best in your future studies and I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to RCI, Mr. Mike Ronan the Vice President of Government Relations for RCCL, and the members of the selection committee for their significant contribution and unwavering support of our young Bermudians.

    you know I’m still waiting to see donations for Bermudian kids who are over seas with Learning Diabilites and still no Charity or anyone will donate money to these kids. they are Bermudian children too. so sad.
