Bermuda Swimmers Win Medals In Canada

August 8, 2014

The Bermuda Masters have had a string of impressive performances at the World Masters Swimming Championships in Canada, winning a host of medals as they compete against thousands of swimmers from over 70 countries.

Bermuda swimmers have collected over ten medals; with 75 year old Sandra Dallas earning herself a place on the podium, both Lisa Blackburn and Colleen Nelson picking up five medals each, while Victor Ruberry also added to the medal tally.

Participating swimmers compete in various age brackets, and there are even several swimmers from around the world competing in the 90-95 age group.

Each swimmer is permitted to enter five individual events in the pool plus relays. Medals are awarded up to tenth place, as there are sometimes more than 200 swimmers in a given age group and event.

15th World Masters Swimming Championships

Colleen Nelson, 65, won gold in the 50 breaststroke, silver in the 50 butterfly, bronze in the 50 metres freestyle, and bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke, and was fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Coach Victor Ruberry, who coaches the swimmers in his swimfit program, run out of the National Sports Centre, was very excited about the results of the team; even he came out of retirement and got back in the pool again.

Mr. Ruberry — who has previously represented Bermuda in the Olympics — earned a medal for his tenth place finish in the 50m breaststroke in the 55-59 age group.

Sandra Dallas, 75, also earned a medal for her tenth place finish in the 75-79 category in the 50m breaststroke.

Lisa Blackburn, who also ranks as one of the island’s top swimmers in the open age group, has won five medals; gold in the 200 IM and 400 IM, silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

These results are very impressive indeed when one realizes that our Bermuda senior swimmers were competing in the WORLD masters swimming championships. We must be doing something right for our ‘mature’ athletes to be excelling. Many of us could learn from their hard work and dedication.

    Well done to all concerned.
