Ceci Wollman Continues At Youth Olympics

August 20, 2014

Ceci Wollman’s Youth Olympic Games campaign has got off to a mixed start in Nanjing, China with two race days under her belt.

From four races the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club sailor is 10th overall. On the opening day Wollman posted a 14th and a 31st after receiving an on water penalty, however she hit back on the second day, “I got a second and fifth today. I got lots and lots of yellow flags yesterday which wasn’t really very good but today I didn’t get any and I had better starts so it all worked out.”

Having tailored her training to suit the light winds building up to the event Wollman is enjoying the 5-6 knot breeze present in, “I like it here, I’m not sure if anyone else does but once you get in time with the shifts it’s really easy and you can keep getting further ahead but once you’ve messed up it’s really hard again.”

Wollman competed at the 2014 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in advance of the Youth Olympic Games, finishing 30th. As the sole representative in Tavira, Portugal she is enjoying having a full Bermudan team alongside her back at the Youth Olympic Village, “It’s fun, I actually have roommates this time. Most of the time they’re sleeping when I leave and when I get back,” joked Wollman. “I’ve met all of them for the first time and now we’re good friends. They’ve asked to come sailing with me but I’m not so sure how much of a good idea that is considering they’ve never been in a boat before.”

The Youth Olympic Games is an experience like no other with a close knit community in the Youth Olympic Village and Wollman is enjoying her stay, “It’s really fun so far and I’ve already met so many people. I’ve seen so many people that I already know as well so it’s been really good.

“I wish every place had a village like it. It’s so awesome and the food is really cool. It’s cool where we go but sometimes it’s kind of weird, I had rice for breakfast this morning.”
