Premier Meets With Indian & Mexican Officials

August 24, 2014

This past Friday [Aug. 22], Premier Michael Dunkley met with Ambassador Sandra Fuentes-Berain of Mexico and Ambassador Dnyaneshwar Mulay of India at the respective Offices of the Consul General of Mexico and the Consul General of India in New York.

Also in attendance at the meetings was Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Derrick Binns and the Bermuda Overseas Representative from the Washington, DC Office, Cheryl Packwood.

A spokesperson said, “The meetings continue Bermuda’s efforts to develop and strengthen relationships with these key G-20 countries by encouraging business, cultural and social connections.

“Both Ambassadors indicated a desire to visit the Island this year in an effort to further the dialogue with Bermuda.

“Ambassador Mulay discussed India’s powerhouse economy of US $1.5 trillion and its 1.2 billion population. He emphasized that the Indian community both in New York and in India constitute an important potential for tourism and business, particularly in areas of financial technology, pharmaceuticals, biotech, hospitality and infrastructure.

“Ambassador Mulay hosted a reception for the Bermuda and Indian business community in May of this year where both the tourism and business community were able to exchange ideas and potential business contacts.

“It should be noted that the previous Mexican Consul General, the Hon. Carlos M. Sada, previously visited Bermuda in May 2012 after initial meetings in New York with Bermuda representatives. Ambassador Fuentes expressed a genuine desire to advance those initial discussions.

“Mexico has a $1.3 trillion economy and has become the second largest export market for the US.”

Following the meetings, Premier Dunkley said, “I was very pleased to meet with both Ambassador Fuentes and Ambassador Mulay on Friday morning while in New York. I was impressed with the level of interest by both countries in Bermuda. Indeed, that they want to enter into continued dialogue with us with a view towards formalizing our good will toward each other.

“This represents a significant step forward in boosting potential business as well as tourism for Bermuda. I thanked Ambassador Mulay for the reception he hosted for Bermuda in May of this year. He is a keen individual who sees great potential in a strong relationship with Bermuda.”

The Premier continued, “Ambassador Fuentes is an avid fisherman and was interested in our fishing opportunities and potential for development. She was particularly interested in our shipping industry. Overall, they were productive and fruitful meetings and I look forward to growing our already blossoming relationships with both India and Mexico.”

At the end of each meeting, Premier Dunkley presented each Ambassador with a copy of the photographic book, Generations Apart, created by local photographer Ally Lusher.

  1. Navin Johnson says:

Hope he asked where the movie studio that The PLP said India would be bringing to
    Bermuda ..

    • Keep it100% says:

No, probably should have talk about all the indians working in the back of restaurants in Bermuda. Stop the BS Mike this does not bring any jobs to Bermuda.

    • Kunta says:

I think um gonna run for politricks so I can rack up my sky miles.

  2. Coffee says:

This is another example of the reptilian nature of the OBA . When DR.BROWN established relations with India the then opposition UBP /OBA and their myopic followers attempted to besmirch and downgrade a very positive political gesture by the PLP . If only I could tell the Indian official what the now Bermuda government really feels about India and her people !

    • Toodle-oo says:

You don’t have to worry about telling any Indian officials how (in your opinion) the Bermudian government feels about them.

They’ve no doubt been getting an earful for the last dozen or so years from their citizens trying to work here about the sh** treatment and xenophobia they get from all your PLP ‘comrades’ .

      • Coffee says:

Wow .. Man are you for real ? The treatment the nationals of India received at the hands of Elitist business owners , their employers , well it’s dreadful . Long hours , low pay and disgusting working conditions , not to mention luring them to Bermuda and than mistreating them … Shame on you to attempt to deflect your abysmal behavior onto unsuspecting and undeserving black Bermudians .

    • FedorEmelianenko says:

Hey Coffee – do you not see the massive difference between the itinerary and focus of this trip and the farce that was undertaken by the last government? I think that most of us were upset that the “good doctor” and his entourage traveled all the way to India to do what Mr. Dunkley probably did in New York.

As long as the Premier does not try to introduce generic milk to the market, to be purchased only from one of his good buddies, I will be fine with the thought that was a typical BS dignitary trip and not one that will soon after, line the pockets of Mr. Dunkley and his network of close friends.

    • Unbelievable says:

Well that’s because there is a difference. Whatever that was supposed to happen between the Indian Govt and the Bermuda Govt never happened. Although to be fair, I do believe there was one student who went over to India for something or another.

Clearly you don’t want to read the article.

    • kat says:

Well what did Dr. Brown get out of India that we can see today?!

      • Trulytruly says:

Wasn’t it a pharmaceutical generic drug deal that was born out of the trip to India?

    • Hurricane says:

@ Coffee, just play the tape. We know he like to smile for the camera but what he has to say when the camera is not on him tells what he’s really thinking.

    • Kangoocar says:

@coffee, once again you have nothing but nonsense to offer to the blog??? As usual I will help you!!! Your plp ( dreb) when he travelled all the way to India with his HUGE entourage ( which premier Dunkley only went to New York ) the dreb only came back with a BIG smile on his face ( after discussing pharmaceuticals off course ) which by the way was at OUR expense!!!!! My god you are daff??????????

      • Coffee says:

As usual Kango it is evident by your infantil post that you know nothing and understand even less ! Dr.Brown went to the top so that what you see now is Dunkley reaping the benefits of the solid foundation laid by a true ambassador of Bermuda .
All I’m hoping for is that Dunkley hasn’t embarrassed Bermuda by his very limited knowledge and exposure on the world stage !

  3. Terry says:

Well look at the bright side.
Cheap weed from Mexico and new knit shops at Morgans Point.
    It’s a win win.

  4. Coffee says:

This is another example of the hypocritical reptilian nature of the OBA . When DR.BROWN established these relationships with India the UBP/OBA ….. Well you know the rest ! The comments from the myopic followers are in the Bernews archives .. Look for yourself ! Hahaha it’s all there …

    • Creamy says:

Brown took an entourage on a First Class trip to India. This trip was to New York. Only a complete imbecile would be unable to see the difference.

Also, Brown focused on healthcare related import opportunities. While on a government trip. Interesting, given hiw sensitive you apparently are these days about conflicts of interest.

      • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

        TO BERNEWS:
Because some of your more rabid bloggers repeat lies does not mean that the lies will be transformed into TRUTH.

I took two trips to India.
The first one resulted in the establishment of basic relationships upon which future governments could build.
The TIAA between the two countries was signed. A agreement was signed between Bermuda and India’s leading film institute. At least two Bermudians have attended the institute. We paved the way for Bermudians to study various disciplines at the expense of the Indian Government. At least four Bermudians have utilized this program to further their studies.
We met with almost 100 film makers in Chennai. They made plans to come to Bermuda to film but ran into visa problems in the United States.
On the second trip I represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. ALL expenses for that trip were paid PERSONALLY by my wife and myself.
We did this because we expected to(and did) examine various personal business opportunities.
We also understood the nature of the Bermuda environment which was polluted with allegations of corruption by the then Opposition. These unfounded allegations helped to render the Bermudian public skeptical about travel by their government officials. You reap what you sow!

        • Coffee says:

@Dr.Brown…Thank you for responding and setting these fools in paradise straight . As you mentioned corruption , these same rabid poster of the OBA steer clear of mentioning anything about the resignation of their disgraced former premier or the involvement of sitting parlimentarians in the BPAC scandal now being investigated by the Bermuda police service . We shall await the outcome .

        • Navin Johnson says:

So four students in how many years? You enjoyed the commonwealth games at your expense…was there a conflict of interest exploring personal business opportunities as a representative of Bermuda? Did your bodyguards attend at your expense? Who is the importer of the generic drugs from India that some have referred to?

          • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

To Navin: Four students went to India within the first year after the program was set up. There was no conflict of interest. My wife took care of the business. That is a lot more conservative and cautious than some business arrangements we saw in Bermuda during the pre-1998 years.
For your edification, I never had “bodyguards”. That too was part of the mythology used by our opponents. We always took at least two team members on trips. The Executive Assistant, who often doubled as security and the Press Secretary for obvious reasons. Whenever the Bermuda Police Service recommended that a police office accompany our group, we cooperated. There was never an “entourage”,except in the minds of those whose hatred of us was clearly evident.
The expenses of the staff who accompanied us were covered under the Cabinet Office budget which was the norm for every country represented in Delhi. In fact, the leaders of many countries were surprised to find that my wife’s travel was NEVER covered by the Government of Bermuda.
I don’t know why you think we have to be secretive about conducting medical/pharmaceutical business. It is a matter of public record that I am a principal in a company that is licensed to import generic pharmaceuticals into Bermuda. Is there something sinister about that? If so, why?

    • kat says:

Been reading the dictionary? Clearly you really aren’t that smart in real life to use words like myopic and reptilian. How much they pay you?!

      • Coffee says:

Says the furry feline who spells cat with a k ! Now if you are Catherine and describe yourself as KAT , then I say it’s time to grow up .

  5. Hurricane says:

You mean that he thinks this is just a waste of F’ing time @ Coffee? It’s probably on tape, let them listen to that.

  6. Navin Johnson says:

It is not the way Government feels Coffee it is about the way many Bermudians treat anyone who speaks with an accent….and as far as establishing relations with India or China just traveling there does not constitute establishing relations …..we will see how you feel if the Chinese invest in any Bermuda hotel properties and some arrive on our shores to work

    • Varied says:

You wont have to worry about that unless we go independent and China’s after our UN vote :-)

  7. ….Surely you jest. says:

This M.O. looks so familiar……right down to the choice of tie…..

  8. somuchless says:

Where is his Bermuda shorts? Guess he won’t wear them outside of Bermy cause they prob think he looks like a fool lol

  9. Robert says:

    Got milk ?!!

  10. Raymond Ray says:

S.S.D.D. from them who oppose the One Bermuda Alliance Govt. :-(
Premier M. H. Dunkley knows what he is doing for the betterment of all Bermudians but unfortunately, some of my Bermudians “friends”(I say friends gingerly) “can’t see the trees for the forest”.
I give credit to the P.L.P. for wanting to further business with outsiders, (including India / Mexico) but unfortunately they were simultaneously cutting off their,(our) nose to spite the face”.

  11. Rasheed says:

    Good work Premier Dunkley.

  12. We Are Not Amused! says:

If EWB and his cohorts had still been the Government of Bermuda, this Island would have been just like India and Mexico.

  13. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

you people dont have a clue…hahaha!

  14. seriously. .... says:

Is this man trying to flood my country with a bucnch of Mexicans and Indians to do the jobs Bermudians need…… this guys a joke.

  15. Bermuda123 says:

Guys can we just all calm down. Dr Brown made the trip and set the stage, Premier Dunkley is continuing the initiative and building upon it. Both are valuable activities, both men have – at least in this instance – the right focus for Bermuda. Give up on the politics and focus on the matter at hand.

  16. Raymond Ray says:

“Give up on the politics and focus on the matter at hand”. I must agree with you Bermuda123

  17. Bingo says:

Great soon thanks to Mr Dunkley Bermudians will be getting Indian Basmati Rice and Mexican “medicinal marijuana” at discounted prices….
