“Team St. George’s” Wins Appleby Fundraiser

August 12, 2014

Appleby’s Bermuda employees doubled the funds raised this year during the firm’s second annual pre-Cup Match charity fundraiser benefiting two local charities.

Appleby staff participated in several July fundraising activities to support their favourite Cup Match team. Team St. George’s supporters raised funds for The Sunshine League and Team Somerset supporters for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.

Team St. George’s was declared the fundraising champion for the second consecutive year at a 29 July staff event and also took home the prize for the firm’s 20/20 Staff Cricket Match held in Victoria Park.

Bermuda Managing Partner and head of Appleby’s Charitable & Social Responsibility Committee Kiernan Bell said, “Our captains for a second year running – Seth Darrell for Team St. George’s and Jarion Richardson for Team Somerset – rallied their respective troops even more as our staff donations essentially doubled from last year.

“Though it was a close result, just over $2,290 was raised by Appleby staff supporting Team St. George’s and just over $2,240 was raised by staff supporting Team Somerset. Appleby Partners were pleased to match this donation resulting in overall donations of $4,592 to The Sunshine League and $4,486 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.

“Congratulations once again to our St. George’s fans and a special thanks to all our staff who generously donated this year.”

Monies raised by Appleby staff will benefit both charities’ principal programs. The Sunshine League has launched “Pathways to Independence”, a transitional living programme for young men between the ages of 18 and 25+ in need of assistance in the areas of education, employment, residential stability and health care. A goal-driven program, each participant identifies and commits to working towards a set of goals with the assistance that The Sunshine League can provide.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda is a mentoring program dedicated to helping children and youth realise their potential by facilitating the development of long-term one-to-one relationships.
