Damaged Boston Whaler Dumped In Water

September 12, 2014

A badly damaged Boston Whaler was recovered offshore of Shelly Bay on Wednesday [Sept 10], after it was apparently dumped into the water.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On Wednesday, September 10 at 12.10pm, a member of the public reported a Boston Whaler type vessel adrift approximately 200 yards offshore from Shelly Bay, drifting towards the stag rocks; no people were observed on the vessel.

“Bermuda Radio commenced urgency broadcasts on VHF channel 16 for any vessels in the area to assist. The Fisheries Department were also contacted, and they proceeded to the area on the Defender. Once on scene, it was confirmed that the vessel was badly damaged and appeared to have been dumped by releasing it into the water.

“No name or registration number could be obtained.

“The vessel was towed by the Defender to Coney Island, whereby it will be disposed of without causing any damage to the environment.”

  1. Commodore JB of BBIRYC says:

Irresponsible boaters cause hazards to responsible yachtsmen like myself and the other members of BBIRYC. The idiot that dumped this boat doesn’t know we are bidding for the America’s Cup?? Is he trying to make us lose the bid?

    • Raymond Ray says:

My, my, what a web we can be weaved…Just for thought, maybe it was done by someone or others conscious of the facts surrounding us either gaining the green light or knowing how to bloc us from being selected as the venue for the America’s Cup? Or, can this be just another political stick in the spokes? (More food for thought)

      • Redo says:

Oh please…more like some kids took it for a joy ride, mangled it and instead of telling mummy and daddy what they did, they ditched it and planned to say it broke loose or got stolen. Simple.

        • Purple Koolaid says:

I don’t think s. No name or registration could be found. That takes a bit of effort to remove those decals. However, I don’t subscribe to the theory that someone is trying to sabotage any event either.

    • Stop making assumptions a - * says:

Why do you think it was the boat owner? Shut up if you don’t know the full facts.

    • Someone says:

oh shut your whining hole in your head. the boat wasn’t dumped you fools I know the people who own the boat it got battered during Cristobal and got stuck on the rocks. the guy who was supposed to get it for him never came and during the last full moon, the high tide took it out to see now please shut up this will not hinder the bid for the American Cup.

  2. Double M Four Twos says:

I agree with Commodore JB.. If this nonsense puts our America’s Cup bid at risk it would be a shame. Responsible yachtsmen like myself and Commodore JB are working had behind the scenes to secure this event and twits like this do not help….I suggest that the owner of that boat take up tiddlywinks as a hobby.

  3. more than enough says:

You do realize that we have to pay for 10,000 hotel room nights, plus 7500 more at half price right? I am sure the reefs would love to oblige…more tax payer money for dodwell.
“Responsible yachtsmen” “working behind the scenes” what a load of crap!
How about working behind the scenes for the benifit of some ordinary people of lesser means. Or are y’all to busy enjoying “the finer things in life”?

    • Come Correct says:

You do realize the return on this event will far outweigh the freebies and discounts given right? Would it make business sense to do that if there wasn’t a bigger picture? Why do these lot “working behind the scenes” need to drop what they’re doing, in their respective field, to help some that probably aren’t even willing to help themselves? Aren’t there people that already do this? Charities ect. Because that’s their respective field? You do realize if we end up hosting this event it will benefit all of us right?

The sense of entitlement is strong with this one.

    • Redman says:

      @ more than enough,

Why not open your own hotel and get some of those ‘taxpayer$$$’ why don’t you take advantage of this event instead of moaning about someone else who has invested many years not to mention their blood sweat and tears ( & their staff) into their chosen profession.

Oh yeah those comments are reflective of many that want the ‘finer things in life’ except they just don’t want the responsibility nor make the sacrifices that it takes to get them. They will sure as sh** moan about others that do though.

      • more than enough says:

        Blood, sweat, and tears, zzzzzzz.
Dodwell is likely salivating over the prospect, as,I am sure, are you.
You do realize that 10,000 hotel room nights is equivalent to renting one room for 27.39 years? This is shaping up to be quite the freinds and family deal. I know how responsible yachtsmen and all the rest of the rich and famous like to stick together.
Not every one is poised to just build hotels, but someone like dodwell, who i am sure,is involved in securing this event, also stands to gain great financial rewards personally from making this happen. Is this not a conflict of intrest?
It’s kind of like settting up a lottery pool, and then taking all the winnings.
This man is already the proud new owner of an undisclosed compensation package courtesy of the government, I mean us (this is apparently the only contribution we can make to gov.)
As mr evans of evans hotels said (bernews) “something stinks”

        • Redman says:

Yup the bad OBA and Mr. Dodwell are responsible for the organizers/participants of an event requesting free bed nights, got it. Also shame on them for trying to get an event here that may well create additional employment and revenue locally!

News Flash for you, Taxi drivers, restaurants and anyone with something to offer the tourist industry will be salivating over this… except Chip on their shoulder types like you of course. So who’s hotel/rooms should they stay in yours?

I don’t own one nor have any interest (shares) in any but why complain about something that may well be good for the island, govt revenues and the beleaguered Hotels and their staff etc…

    • Raymond Ray says:

Unfortunately, many Bermudians “can’t see the trees for the forest” There is much to be gained only if…
Here’s a thought for today:”The battles that count aren’t the ones for gold medals. The struggles are within yourself — The invisible, inevitable battles inside all of us, that’s where it’s at”. (Jesse Owens, four-time Olympic gold medalist 1913-1980)

$10,000 free hotel room nights for free?
Talk about a strong sense of entitlement!

  5. more than enough says:

    Right?

  6. darren booth says:

every boat has a hull #on its hull.send the owner the bill.

  7. Puma says:

It was a giant squid, any fisherman will tell you once they eat the person or persons in the boat they make it look like an accident…they are highly intelligent wiggly jigglies…they will suck the numbers right off a hull afterwards…ever seen a parrot eat a peanut?….same fatchin thing..
They reach right in a small boat…some boston whalers have low gunnels and you will always see the diamond shaped pad first there are two of them ,you should never sleep outside a cabin on deck at night in deep water.

  8. Puma says:

Seriously though I had one reach in a 17′ wooden boat out at kitchens at night,it was a very still night…and we heard it bump the boat before it reached in and started feeling around….but that….is another story…
