Exhaust Insulation Fire Extinguished At BELCO

[Updated with Fire Service statement] The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service this afternoon [Sept 4] responded to the Bermuda Electric Light Company [BELCO] complex on Serpentine Road to a reported fire.

A BELCO spokesperson said, “At approximately 3:00pm today, the insulation surrounding the exhaust system of an engine caught fire at BELCO. The Fire Service was called immediately, and the fire was contained and extinguished. The cause is being investigated.”

Update 4.47pm: Fire Service Media Relations Officer Sergeant Russann Francis stated, “At 2:43 pm on Thursday, September 4th 2014, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service [BFRS] Emergency Dispatch Centre received a 911 call from the Bermuda Electric Light Company [BELCO] Control Centre reporting “there’s a fire at BELCO with smoke and flames visible in Zone 6 D8-10”.

“The Fire Service responded to the BELCO main entrance on Serpentine Road, Pembroke with 6 vehicles and 10 personnel. The fire was quickly located and extinguished with the use of a dry chemical powder. Firefighters continued to investigate the area to ensure that all flames were extinguished.

“No one was hurt as a result of this incident; damage was confined to an area of air-conditioning insulation within sheet metal duct work. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.”

  5. Currently we may require legislation on asbestos in brake shoes,we have a tenancy to get cheaper car parts from unscrupulous sources due to govt. And her inate greed at customs and duty imposesd.Generally their insatiable apatite for duty has caused bermuda buisiness to import cheap rubbish and sell at near cost in order to make a profit(this has to change by the way)It might be of interest to know how they found out about asbestous in brake shoes…..

  6. apparently….when they looked at a map topografically of all the people who got mysotheleoma they put a red dot where they lived to deduce by deduction…like Sherlock….why these people got it in the first place….they found that all the red dots were at intersections,or fourway stop signs…or frequented race tracks frequently….bingo…brak shoes…..the dust is lighter than air and can waft from intersection to penthouse suite…….unbeknownst to the most descerning health nut!

  7. Something to think about when buying that condo in Hamilton….or decideing to live there….now you know!I ask the island me hanics to wear microbal masks when changing break shoes….they might be from a place with no regulation
