“Michael Dunkley” Contemporary Art Exhibit

September 11, 2014

A contemporary art exhibit entitled “Michael Dunkley” will be opening at the Bermuda College Art Gallery this evening [Sept 11], with the exhibit set to feature two different forms of visual art: instillation and intervention.

Artist Calix Smith explained that that he doesn’t want to divulge too much about the actual content of the exhibit, as it wouldn’t be adhering to the concept fully, adding that “people can expect the unexpected due to the title I have chosen.”

“Michael Dunkley has nothing to do with Michael Dunkley and in some ways, everything to do with him,” said Mr. Smith. “I can say that the concept and its content are part of a discussion that I believe Bermudians at large run away from too much, and unfortunately it has prompted me to go in a direction that is vague or better yet subliminal.”

“Also, this is a means of challenging viewers and patrons of the arts to think, think instead of being spoon fed the entire concept. As artists we are doing people a disservice by not allowing them to formulate their own opinions and perspectives on what they see, hear and feel… it’s ok to do so, because it is my belief that then they will be comfortable with asking questions.

“The title of a work of art doesn’t always have to represent the concept and its content. But! There are clues. My Facebook page has quotes under the title of Michael Dunkley. Those quotes are to steer people in the direction of this exhibit’s true intentions.”

Mr. Smith added that this is an ongoing work of art from start to finish, and the gallery space will change and evolve until the closing date of October 10th.

  1. hmmm says:

    You say “Expect the unexpected”

So we will turn up and there will be no reference to Michael Dunkley, his work or his image being used in art, as that is my expectation when an art exhibit entitled “Michael Dunkley” is announced.

Your advert is what I expected, so how is that unexpected..

Art eats itself once more !

Good luck with the exhibit. Perhaps you should glimpse some more of the unexpected to support your pitch.

  2. Rhonda says:

now I understand all the photo opportunities, whilst no work gets done…

    • JustAskin2 says:

Hmm… It’s beginning to look like Dunkley is gearing up to be one of the most photographed, posturing Premiers we’ve ever had. Wonder if he’s doing anything besides making sound bites and having his picture taken everywhere?

      • Hmmm says:

The hospital….what was before that ? I don’t think he posed for this show.

  3. Trust NOT says:

If I was a betting, how much you want to bet you won’t see him portrayed with horns?

    • Creme Brulee says:

Well the cow he is milking might still have horns, no bull.

  4. Raymond Ray says:

Good luck with your Art Show Calix Smith. I can almost hear the critics complaining already about our Premier, Michael Dunkley being posted on whatever it is you’re displaying his image on :-(

    • Kunta says:

I wonder how this would’ve been received, Dr. Ewart Brown Contemporary Art Exhibit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is Bull S— at de highest level !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Boston Baked says:

    Typical Rhonda comment. FAIL.

  6. Josette says:

Calix continue to live, love and laugh…Don’t get boxed in!! Way to go, critical thinkers are innovators….

    • Hmmm says:

So critics are innovators. Erm OK. Well done all the critica on here.

I think that innovators are creators. Critics compare to existing, not what it is to itself.

      • smh says:

Critics and critical thinkers are two completely different concepts, you did go to high school I hope, because your attempting to sound smarter than the average bear and making yourself look idiotic

  7. Cardine Alice says:

    But “is it art”?

    • artist says:

everything is art. Andy Warhol once peed on a canvas and called it art.

  8. Jennifer Simmons says:

Good Luck Calix. I know you have worked hard on this show. I can’t wait to pop by to see what you have done. Don’t let the negative comments get to you. Hopefully the Hon. Michael Dunkley will grace you with an appearance. I applaud you for thinking, and stepping outside the box as an artist.

  9. smh says:

    The king of photo ops!

    • Kangoocar says:

@smh, let me correct you, there is only ONE king of photo ops!!! His name is dreb!!!! I recall one really funny pic of him playing cricket with some famous cricket player from the West Indies and one of the the pro golfers that were here competing in the annual Pro Am golf classic!!! When the cricketer and golfer was asked about the quality of cricket the dreb produced, neither one of them recalled him even playing with them?????? Hope this helps your selective memory and in the future make you think about the nonsense you write before you actually write it!!!!!!

  10. Coffee says:

In the words of Micheal Dunkeley “What a waste of EFFIN film.” Haha … Calix , Andy Warhol woulda captured the expression on Craig Cannonier’s face when he realized GP1 left him on the sidewalk outside of the music box !
Now I would have paid good money to see that show !

  11. Rockfish#1 says:

People commenting on an art exhibition without seeing it. Amazing!!

  12. Come On Man says:

    Your bloody well kidding me!!

  13. Oh please says:

Seriously people go see the art exhibit before you judge it. I’ve known Calix for years he is extremely talented and the boys art is amazing he had shows before. So to judge the art before seeing it is a moot point like judging a book by its cover or a person by their skin color you won’t get it right. Good luck calix I’m very curious after seeing the Facebook post I’m totally unsure of what to expect.

  14. Art and expression and different inseptual approach ….good quest .
