Bermuda Olympians Earn IOC Scholarships

October 1, 2014

The Bermuda Olympic Association [BOA] announced that all of Bermuda’s London 2012 Olympians who were successful in gaining interim scholarships between the current Olympic Games period have been confirmed upon the BOA’s application for the official full IOC Olympic Scholarships for “Rio 2016”.

It was in January 2014 that the same athletes were awarded IOC Olympic interim scholarships.

The new full scholarships for Rio 2016 will take effect from September 2014 when the following athletes will each receive USD $1,000 per month, paid quarterly, until August 2016 under the International Olympic Committee’s [IOC] Olympic Solidarity Programme, administered for Bermuda by the BOA:

  • Tyrone Smith [Athletics]
  • Arantxa King [Athletics]
  • Jillian Terceira [Equestrian]
  • Roy-Allan Burch [Swimming]
  • Tyler Butterfield [Triathlon]
  • Flora Duffy [Triathlon]

The BOA said, “Olympic Solidarity is the IOC commission responsible for administering and managing the National Olympic Committees’ [NOC] share of the broadcast rights from the Olympic Games.

“It redistributes these funds through programmes according to the needs and priorities of the NOCs and their Continental Associations. Programmes are divided into four areas: Athletes; Coaches; NOC Management; and Promotion of the Olympic Values.

“Athletes’ programmes are structured to enable the NOCs to provide technical and financial assistance to athletes at all levels who are preparing for international competitions.

BOA President Judy Simons said, “The BOA is jubilant that the IOC has awarded scholarships to Bermuda’s elite athletes who represented us so well at the last Summer Games.

“As they continue to prepare for Rio, our athletes have committed themselves to almost full-time training and coaching, which requires a substantial financial commitment. The BOA is pleased to have assisted them in securing financial support for this period and in helping foster their journeys to success.”
