Regulatory Authority On Restoration Progress

October 23, 2014

Bermuda’s Telecommunications carriers are required by law to keep the Bermuda Regulatory Authority abreast of network outages and progress made in restoring service after storms like Fay and Gonzalo, and the RA said that they are doing that.

Kyle Masters, Acting CEO, Regulatory Authority, said, “Overall, carriers have made great progress in getting us back to normal, although some pockets of damage remain at this date.

“The Authority would like to applaud those involved on their efforts during the restoration – we know that they have had to work very hard indeed to deal with problems which must have seemed particularly daunting at the beginning. We stand with them in their efforts, and trust they will be able to reinstate all services in good time.

“We would remind the public that we do investigate complaints, if any consumer feels the restoration of his service should have been accomplished by now and has not been. We would not be able to do anything, of course, if the fault lies in lack of power or the failure of the consumer’s own equipment.

“Where the Authority is concerned, this has been a useful exercise, in that it has exposed a weakness in our reporting procedures. There has been little consistency in the way each carrier has reported its progress.

“This has made it difficult for consumers, especially, to follow what has been going on. With that understanding the RA will review its reporting procedures so that future information is clear, concise and consistent across all carriers. We will continue to report on the progress we make to the public.

“The RA would like to express its sympathy to the public and thank them for their patience and understanding as we battle back to normal.”

Can the RA ageee that customers who are still without power after Fay NOT pay the Facilities Charges off Belcos monthly billing. After all, the Facilities Charge is the cost incurred to provide power from the plant to the customer. No power – no facilities charge. As my fee is $33 per month, I’ll going to remove $1.00 per day I don’t have power.
