St. Georges Mayor: ‘Determined To Look Good’

October 24, 2014

Post-hurricane clean up progress in St. George’s is in full swing, with Mayor of St. Georges Garth Rothwell saying that there is a cruise ship scheduled for next week, and “we are determined to show this old town can take on a hurricane and still look good one week later.”

The Regatta cruise ship — an occasional caller to Bermuda — is scheduled to dock at Pennos Wharf in St. George’s next week Thursday, carrying an estimated 709 passengers and 386 crew.

Mayor Rothwell said, “As a result of the damage from Hurricanes Fay and Gonzolo, the Corporation of St Georges is currently working on replacing all traffic signage and lamp posts around the town.

“This is our safety priority. Several of the Corporation buildings have some roof damage and these buildings have been cleaned up and made waterproof.

Mayor Rothwell continued, “Immediately after the hurricane our crews made all streets and roads accessible for traffic and now are concentrating on cleaning up the town and removing truckloads of debris. Trash collection is back on schedule.

“There is a cruise ship scheduled for next week and we are determined to show this old town can take on a hurricane and still look good one week later!

“The shrubs and especially some tall trees in Somers gardens have been badly affected and debris is scattered around the gardens. At a recent emergency meeting the Corporation decided to keep these gardens closed whilst the town is made safe and completely cleaned up.

“Clean up of Somers Gardens will commence as manpower becomes available from priority work. The trees will be assessed to determine the best solution for each one as some have sustained extensive damage and may be unsafe in their current condition. We ask everyone, especially those who use the Gardens regularly, to bear with us whilst we sort out the mess.

“As Mayor I would like to thank our Works Supervisor and his crew once again for their ongoing dedication to the town and especially their hard work over the last two weeks,” added Mayor Rothwell.

“Also, Councillor Anderson for his work as our on the spot contact with the EMO and all St Georges residents for the community spirit which has been evident to all. A special thank you to those who came out and helped to clear up immediately after the hurricane.”

“If” it hasn’t been looked into then I would like to suggest the Chief Officer of Pender Hill Prison Farm along with Commissioner Ed. Lambe’s to permission to take a few of them that are able bodied from the prison farm to help straighten up the areas in and around the Ole Town. Also if possibly to help refit the replica of The Deliverance out on Ordinance Island?

The Mayor is right to make an effort to get the Ole Town up to Par for the Cruise Ship Visit. – one thing for sure is that he can count on MP Kenny Bascomb,Phillip Aderson and others that are active in the Town.
The Farm Facility Inmates would be a perfect choice to help.– give it a shot’ just call the Farm Facility Chief ‘
That Cruise Ship should be welcomed with open arms.— to bad they can’t make a few more visits.
