Ministry Update On Harbour Road Repair Works

November 25, 2014

The Ministry of Public Works updated the public today regarding repair works which are currently taking place near Salt Kettle Road.

A Ministry spokesperson said, “When the wall collapsed, as a result of a falling tree following Tropical Storm Fay, part of the road adjacent to the wall was also compromised. This resulted in a large crack appearing a couple of feet from the road edge which if trafficked would also give way.

“Therefore, it has been necessary to keep the road single file in this location since this time. The Ministry will replace the wall with one that is properly engineered and can support the loadings from the road.

“The Ministry apologizes for any inconvenience and advises motorists and pedestrians to exercise patience and additional caution in this section of Harbour Road.”

Fair enough. Thank you for the update. Lots of people have been wondering what is going on.

Maybe if these clown were not asleep in their little mobile home most of the day it would get done a lot quicker, if it took 6 weeks just to get on site one can only imagine how long they will milk this job for!

  3. Micro says:

I guess this will take 6 months to complete. 4 hours worth of work for full days pay. Other places in the world they can construct a 30 story earthquake rated building in 15 days,.

The Ministry also needs to send a crew along the length of Harbour Road and remove the trees that are growing on the side the road along the water side; these will eventually get big enough to cause serious damage simply from their roots and weight or them falling over and pulling the bank out with them – there’s several casuarinas and even a Norfolk Pine.

who is paying for the private wall…

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

Put a decent private contractor in there & the job will be done in 2 weeks.

  6. Coffee says:

Who owned the fallen tree , who owns the wall ? Is the insurance going to cover the cost ? Are the taxpayers going to foot the bill ? What is the estimated time of completion ?

  7. Sad Bermudians says:

I bet this gets finished before the disaster near the Marsh Folly Depot!

    Shameful!

no one seem to want to answer if tax payer should be paying for wall on private property… let me remind you of the Minister when she was in Opposition…

UBP on Wall: ‘Cronyism & Favouritism Continues’
    December 14, 2010
Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, Shadow Minister for Works & Engineering, said “The revelation that Works & Engineering staff is doing major repair work on a wall owned by former Premier Brown says the cronyism and favouritism practiced so shamelessly by the former Government continues today.”

Yesterday [Dec 14] in the House of Assembly, Shadow Education Minister Grant Gibbons said he had been contacted by area residents who wanted to know why public funds had been spent to have a crew rebuild a wall situated on private property over a weekend. The wall in question is situated on the Brown Darrell Clinic property, which runs parallel to South Shore Road near John Smith’s Bay. Works Minister Derrick Burgess said the repairs were necessary in the interests of public safety, adding: “Dr. Brown has agreed to pay for that wall.”
Ms Gordon-Pamplin continued on to say that “It makes no difference that Dr. Brown says he will pay for the repair work. Clearly, his commitment to do so was made only after the public outcry.More to the point, why was Works & Engineering staff fixing a private wall in the first place?”

“Has Government changed its policy? Is the public now able to get Works & Engineering to fix repairs at private homes? Can people get their own walls fixed? How about driveway paving? Landscaping?”

“The most shocking side of this sorry mess is the Government’s insensitivity to the economic crisis that is hurting big and small businesses across the island. By agreeing to fix Dr. Brown’s wall, the Government took business away from small contractors who could have used the work. Dr. Brown and Works Minister Derrick Burgess, who is also the Deputy Premier, should apologize to the public for this specific “oversight.” Further, to hear Ministers trying to defend an indefensible position with distortion and spin is shameful.”

“Beyond them, the Premier has once again allowed bad practices to happen under her watch. It is inexcusable. We note she did not comment on the situation when she had the opportunity to during Monday’s House of Assembly sitting. We urge her now to step forward as the Government leader to explain how this unacceptable situation came about.”

    • Rhonda says:

Has the Minister of W&E changed her mind about government workers being used to fix, rebuild, make repairs, to walls on private property…what about the small business man, are they not valued now that the OBA is at the helm… ….

      • Raymond Ray says:

I believe the public deserve an appropriate explanation for that project being tackled out of Taxpayers pockets…if that’s true. I can agree with repairs being made to public roads but not any being made on private property without a fee being attached for the expenses

  9. PPamplin says:

The question by Rhonda Neil was asked and answered on Facebook earlier today. The same malicious comments are being repeated here, so that is evidence that she does not want responses, rather, appears only wishing to create mischief.

The Ministry notification advised that the road was undermined. If we did not fix the road, and allowed vehicles to traverse and cause the collapse of the road, there would be another comment about negligence.

The owners of the wall will meet the costs of their repairs. We will fix the road which is a main thoroughfare. Again, these are hurricane damages, not elective construction.

I don’t see where Rhonda Neil worried about the ‘small businessman’ when her party members were helping themselves to lucrative government contracts without bid.

    The hypocrisy is astounding.
