Video: Firefighter Alvin Baker Is Laid To Rest

November 6, 2014

Family, friends and Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service coworkers gathered at Glory Temple located at Southside, St. David’s today [Oct 6] to pay respects and celebrate the life of fire fighter Alvin Baker Jr. who died suddenly last week.

Officiating the ceremony was Reverend Lorne Bean and tributes were read by Chief Fire Officer Lloyd Burchall, fireman Jermaine DeSilva, representatives from the Hamilton Parish Football Club, the Berkeley Institute Class of 1986 and members of Mr Baker’s family. Words of comfort were offered by Reverend Judith Gardner.

Escorted by police, the procession — which included a large contingent of Fire Service vehicles and personnel — left the church with Mr Baker’s casket draped in a flag and carried on the back of a fire truck.

As the group proceeded to Hamilton they were met along the way by members of the Bermuda Police Service showing their respect at both the Southside and Hamilton Police Stations.

Members of the airport fire department lined their vehicles near Kindley Field Road spraying an arch of water as the procession passed with officers standing at attention on their vehicles.

The motorcade drove by the Hamilton Fire Station where vehicles were lined in front of the building and staff stood to attention offering their last goodbye.

I actually watched the procession, and it brought a tear to my eyes as well. Such a beautiful send off, and says a lot to the strong bond the fire service seems to have. True heroes, each and every one of them.
