Let’s Talk: Parenting In The 21st Century

November 17, 2014

The Family Centre Team will be on Bermuda Broadcasting Programme “Let’s Talk” this evening [Nov 17] discussing “Parenting in the 21st Century—What are Bermuda’s Challenges and Successes?”

The team will appear on ZBM’s Let’s Talk chat show, hosted by Gary Moreno, at 8pm to discuss the challenges of families, being an effective role model, and how parenting trends affect social problems such as gang crime and unemployment.

Family Centre Executive Director Martha Dismont will also highlight the charity’s inspirational “Change Starts With Me” campaign, which launched on November 3.

The initiative aims to encourage the public to think about how we can make a difference in the lives of young people by making simple changes in the way we think and behave.

The hard-hitting campaign aims to be a “wake-up call” that urges the community to acknowledge that we cannot ask others to be the best person they can be if we do not do the same ourselves.

A number of individuals who have made changes – such as a former inmate who turned his back on crime – have spoken about their experiences as part of the campaign.

Mrs. Dismont will be joined on Let’s Talk, which will focus on the theme “Parenting in the 21st Century: What are Bermuda’s Challenges and Successes?” by Dr. Sandy DeSilva, Family Centre Director of Services; Darien Douglas, Family Support Specialist; and Marilyn Outerbridge, a grandmother raising her grandchild.

The show begins at 8pm and the Family Centre staff will answer some of the following questions:

  1. The Marketing Campaign, “Change Starts With Me?” What is it about? Where did the idea come from?
  2. What are the challenges that families are facing today and what can you tell people to give them hope? What does “Parenting in the 21st Century look like?” How hard is parenting today?
  3. How can parents be effective role-models to their children?

A grandparent will also share a little about her story, how she got to Family Centre and about changes she made to get her where she is today.

If time permits, other questions that will be addressed are:

  1. What can you tell parents who feel desperate and helpless?
  2. How are parenting trends today affecting our current social problems such as gang involvement and unemployment?
  3. What is this thing that everyone is talking about nowadays called “Multigenerational Trauma?” What can we do about it?
  4. How can families take care of themselves?
  5. How can families get help?
