Local Artist Jonah Jones Cycles For Art

November 13, 2014

Local artist Jonah Jones recently cycled for charity, with the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard [BACD] benefiting from his endeavor.

Organized by Charles Thresh through Classic Tours, a group that runs challenges that are aimed at raising funds for charity, the event saw Mr. Jones undertake the Alpine challenge.

Dubbed “Vertically Challenged” thanks to the climbing involved in the ride, the endeavor raised approximately $3,000 for the BACD.

Mr Jones said, “There are generally about 25 people on the Alpine challenge, primarily from Bermuda. We all chose our own charities.

“I raised somewhere in the region of $3,000 for BACD with direct donations for the ride and auctioning a painting.”

“I have a long relationship with BACD, where I used to have a studio. Though I have since moved out of the studio. I still like to support the organisation.

“I had a show a few years ago called “Vertically Challenged” where all the paintings were vertical format. I had undergone shoulder surgery, and so it was the easiest shape to paint with my limited arm movement following the operation.”

“This year I crashed in the cycling Grand Prix in April and was unable to paint for four months due to multiple fractures of the collar bone and ribs, so it was a different kind of race to get fit for the Alpine tour and back to painting again.”

Preceding the event, on his website, Mr. Jones said, “Until recently, I had a studio and worked at the BACD for almost 20 years and want to continue my support for this amazing organization. The BACD is a small, local charity where every dollar goes a long way and makes a difference to artists and art-lovers.”

“I will be riding from Nice to Annecy in five days; 560km, 14,000m climbing, 15 Alpine passes, six of which are classified as “HC” – beyond classification – by the Tour de France. This includes the famed and feared Alpe d’Huez.

“This has been a challenging personal journey for me since I broke some ribs and my collar bone into four pieces in a cycling accident four months ago. I have trained hard to get my fitness back for the trip, notably riding over 1,250km in August, riding 129 miles in one day and climbing Lighthouse Hill, our Bermuda mountain of 221 feet, 56 times, typically at the hottest part of the day to make it more difficult.”

A spokesperson for the BACD said, “In these times of struggling charities, the Bermuda Arts Centre is humbled to be accepting such an impressive donation from one amazing artist.”
