Video: Cruise Ship Diverts For Sick Passenger

[Updated] The Holland America Line cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam diverted to the island for sick passenger, arriving off St David’s late Thursday night [Nov 6].

Pilot boat St David rendezvoused with the cruise ship off the east end where the sick passenger and medical personnel from the ship were transferred to Ordnance Island.

An awaiting ambulance transported the passenger to King Edward Memorial Hospital while the pilot boat returned to the ship to disembark the ship’s medical staff and medical equipment.

The Nieuw Amsterdam was on its way from Ponta Delgada, Azores to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Netherlands flagged ship is 936 feet long with 929 crew and capacity for over 2000 passengers.

Update: A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On Thursday 6th November 8:01am, Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre was notified by Meyer’s Agents, representing Cruise Ship Nieuw Amsterdam, that an elderly gentleman was to be landed at Bermuda in critically ill condition.

“Liaising with King Edward Memorial Hospital [KEMH], the 69 year-old man was prepared for evacuation to the care of KEMH medical professionals.

“The ship arrived in Bermuda waters from Ponta Degada, in the Azores, at 11:25pm and conducted the patient transfer to the Pilot/Rescue Vessel St. David for transport ashore to a waiting KEMH ambulance. The patient was transported to KEMH and the ship departed Bermuda for Fort Lauderdale, Florida at 00:45am Friday morning.”
