Appleby: Official Law Firm Of 2017 America’s Cup

December 4, 2014

Bermuda firm, Appleby, has been named as the Official Law Firm of the 2017 America’s Cup, and will be providing the America’s Cup Event Authority with a full range of legal services for the 35th America’s Cup which will be held in Bermuda in 2017.

“It is an incredible honour for Appleby to be partnering with the America’s Cup Event Authority in delivering this seminal event to Bermuda,” said Kiernan Bell, Managing Partner of Appleby’s Bermuda office.

“Over its 163-year history, the America’s Cup has been held in just 8 locations and we think that Bermuda is a natural fit for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017. Bermuda’s history of competition, commerce and success is inextricably linked to our maritime heritage, and we look forward to doing our part in making this a chapter in our history books never to be forgotten.”

“Appleby has already provided valued support in helping to bring the America’s Cup to Bermuda and we have been impressed by the firm’s strength and depth across the board and undoubted technical legal expertise,” said Sam Hollis, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of the America’s Cup Event Authority.

“In its role as Official Law Firm, Appleby will be an important partner for the America’s Cup Event Authority as we relocate and grow our business, staff and operations in Bermuda.”

The 35th America’s Cup begins with America’s Cup World Series events in 2015 and 2016 at locations around the world, including the UK, Italy, Sweden, Bermuda and the US. Racing takes place in the newly turbocharged AC45 foiling catamarans.

In 2017, all teams will compete in their new AC62 catamarans, powered by highly-efficient wingsails and designed to fly above the water on foils at speeds of nearly 50 mph.

Racing begins for all teams with the America’s Cup Qualifiers where the teams are seeded – with bonus points – according to their results in the America’s Cup World Series. The top challengers then go on to compete for the America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs and the right to race Oracle Team USA in the America’s Cup Finals in Bermuda in June 2017.

Congrats to all involved – rumour is that Appleby were instrumental in getting us the cup. lawyers arent always bad news…

    same old same old

  3. Triangle Drifter says:

I guess this is not an example of trickle down. More like a deluge

    • Portia says:

Hardly. I don’t call money going to the wealthy partners at Appleby a “trickle down” at all.

      • accountmon says:

yes those nasty bermudian partners should stop hiring all those hundreds of bermudians….. and they should stop making money, quit and complain on Bernews.

sarcasm side Im not sure you understand what getting a client like this means for a firm. Lots of new work probably at a junior level – means hiring young bermudians to fill it who will work hard for 20 years and hopefully be the next partners. simple and good

the only thing my dad loved more than AS+K was sailing, he would be very proud. Fine job.

  5. Coffee says:

Of all the law firms in Bermuda ! Old Boys Association gleefully doing the grab dance !

  6. ….Surely you jest. says:

and so it begins…..let the 1% go forth and prosper….

    • Politricks says:

All lawyers are part of the 1%. In order to become a lawyer you are part of the 1% as not too many 99%ers can afford the education.

You lot just want to complain to hear yourselves speak I swear.

You provide nothing to this island.

      • KingLawyer says:

this is unbelievably false. I am in my final year at law school in london and I come from a family that is no where near the “1%”. With the necessary hard work the finances take care of themselves.

Firms like Appleby and Conyers Dill and Pearman bring in huge clients and their businesses that inject millions of dollars annually into bermuda’s economy. They have also put us on the map as a top legal strong hold globally.

educate yourself before you wreck yourself

    • PULEEASE says:

and so it begins, where those who work hard and are succesful are told that this only because they are in the “1%”. I assum you would have said the same for any law firm which got the cup?

My wife is at appleby as a secretary and her job is more secure now – and many more jobs will kick in there as a result. Well done and long may it continue

    • serengeti says:

So you would have preferred it if a San Diego firm got the work.
      How anti-Bermudian.

  7. MAKE MY DAY says:

That should be worth quite a few $$$ to the company!!!

  8. Bermuda123 says:

What are you all saying? Would you have preferred the appointment to go to an NY firm! Congratulations Appleby.
