Video: Bascome On St George’s, Airport & Cup

December 15, 2014

Following the news that Bermuda will host the 2017 America’s Cup and a developer plans to start construction on a new hotel in St. George’s next year, One Bermuda Alliance MP Kenny Bascome said he believes that Bermuda “is on the upswing.”

On Friday, Minister Shawn Crockwell said that the Venezuela-based Desarrollos group confirmed they will construct a five star hotel in St George’s, with the $120 million project slated to begin in mid-2015.

When asked about the hotel announcement, the St. George’s North said, “First of all, I would like to say kudos to the Minister and his negotiating team. This is something that we’ve been waiting for for over 25 years.

“We’ve had a fiasco for the last five and a half years, and it’s my hope that this group will be coming to the board with something concrete.

When asked if he is confident that we will see shovels in the ground next year, Mr Bascome said, “They’ve made a commitment that they intend to do something next year.

“I believe that with the America’s Cup being announced, with St. George’s in the process of building a marina, I believe that Bermuda as a whole is on the upswing and I’m hopeful that everyone will buy into the euphoria and take Bermuda where we know it can go.”

Speaking on the benefits of the America’s Cup, Mr Bascome said, “I believe as we do the promotion the town of St. George will get some exposure, seeing that we are a World Heritage Site.

“We have a harbour that I believe can house many of the yachts that will possibly sail up here in anticipation of seeing the yacht racing in the Great Sound, so I believe the opportunity is there for everyone to share in the economic bonanza.

Asked about the airport development plans, Mr Bascome said, “I support what the Minister has done, in this economic climate, and if you speak to anyone and they be honest about it, that airport has been needing a revamp for a long time, and I believe in the Minister, and what he’s doing and done, I believe it’s in the best interests of the country, and going forward we will have an international airport.”

Asked about the Causeway appearing to not being part of the plan, Mr Bascome said,  ”I believe that that is being factored into the equation going forward, so at this time I’m not going to say no…

“In my own humble opinion I don’t believe that it would make sense to build a billion dollar airport and not build a road that is the road that goes in and out of the airport. I believe that will all be in the pipeline as we go forward,” added Mr Bascome.

I thank you Minister Kenny Bascome for your straight forwardness and for being optimistic, as so many others are. Now’s the time for
    “we’lot” / all Bermudians to, “step-up-to-de-mic”

I’m hopeful that everyone will buy into the euphoria !
Roses are red , violets are blue , when the shovels hit the ground I’ll be euphoric too !
What about that toll bridge into St.Geo. ? What about that separate tax for airline passengers landing in St.Geo. ? Well Kenny those are the things that you proposed ! And now your euphoric over words and empty promises !
    Shame on you !

    • Comet says:

What’s funny is that I recall Kenny saying something abouts shovels in early 2013, then again you have to tell the people something even if it’s BS.

The Dunk will never make you a Minister, and that’s not funny it’s the truth.

    • Impressive says:

Well Coffee, It is Santa Claus season, thus people will tell there own family members all types of lies just to keep the status quo.. Shame shame shame,, The fact that this MP was included in the OBA campaign speaks volumes for their desperation.. His hands are tied anyway, I don’t think he would say something that is in contrast with his puppet masters. smdh

    • GOD1ST says:

Kenny is man of substance and he produces results, not only is he an entrepreneur and job creator but he is active and well respected in the St.George’s community .

I don’t think this part of the plan that Bob Richards has been talking about. me thinks the front bench and back bench don’t have much collaboration.

    • Voter says:

This is why they refuse to give him a position the man talks and says things likes he’s not part of the team. Almost like he’s on a one man show.

      • Impressive says:

They refuse to give him a position because he is not up to standard. He is only good to get a seat because for some reason he is popular in St. Georges.. Heaven forbid.. Please keep the Cup in Somerset.. smh

        • Impressive says:

the cup match talk is just tongue n cheek and a joke by the way,, but your choice of candidates is confusing to say the least.

    Politics 101.
He gets the vote and gets elected.
    Basically a # and a seat.

Never had time for the man.
Then again, he is a member of the ruling party and that matters because ……
Look at the status of the HOA.

    Rum all around.

  6. Sky Pilot says:

    St.George’s has much to do!

One store, the Cashier’s are the RUDEST in the world. Both of them destroy in seconds anything good that other people in St.George’s do.

Other smaller shops have 2 or 3 gangsta types hanging by the door all day,who in their right mind is going to think about window shopping let alone walk in.

5pm.The town is DEAD!,all shops are closed, did they sell anything?

Another store, every time I drive past that shop I see a group of guys either down the alley way or right outside the shop, another off putting sight.Bikes and Cars parked on the Pedestrian Crossing.

There is another larger shop that has it’s windows all boarded up and has even painted the wood boards red! (on the main road).

    St.George’s has much to do.

    • ya right says:

With no cruise ship and no hotel it’s very hard to do anything.

  7. Raymond Ray says:

Kenny is a man that believes, (as I believe) one must go through hell in order to enter into heaven.

  8. Towne Cut says:

    Mr.Bascome is for St Georges.
The PLP representatives ruined things for we St.Georgians.

    • Impressive says:

OMG, what next.. You guys don’t deserve the cup for keep voting for Kenny and giving Nandi a seat..
