People’s Campaign 2014 Year End Summary

December 31, 2014

The People’s Campaign for Equality, Jobs and Justice released a 20-page “Year in Review” covering some of the actions of the campaign, which launched in April of this year.

“As the year draws to a close, and we look back at the record of the People’s Campaign, while there is still much work to be done, we think that the people of Bermuda who have supported the People’s Campaign can look back with a degree of pride in the accomplishments of this fledgling movement,” said a message from campaign leaders Rev. Nicholas Tweed, Chris Furbert and Jason Hayward.

“Victor Hugo once said, ‘nothing is as great as an idea whose time has come,’ and it is clear that for Bermuda a People’s movement, unconstrained by the political posturing, brinkmanship, and jousting that attempts to pass for legislative politics, is an idea whose time has come.

Launch of the People’s Campaign on April 17 2014

“The People’s Campaign has replaced political expedience with the People’s business and in these past months have demonstrated that the people can and must be heard by those who are entrusted to serve them.

“The People’s Campaign has demonstrated that elected representatives can no longer take the support of the people for granted and that they can and must be held accountable for what they do in the people’s name irrespective of political party.

“At the outset of the People’s Campaign we were acutely aware and honest with the people of Bermuda that many of the issues and challenges that we face would not be solved overnight, but require sustained engagement and endurance.

“We have honored our commitment and remain dedicated to the continued struggle to transform Bermuda into an oasis of Equality, Jobs, and Justice.

“As is the case with many movements, we have tried to be conservative and forthright with our supporters so as not to create false expectations regarding the time that is needed to bring about substantive change.

“While we understand and share the frustrations of having to live daily in the face of continued injustice, exclusion, and mistreatment, we understand that as the poet once said, ‘the mills of the gods grind slowly but exceedingly fine,’ and so we march forward uplifted by the buoyancy of hope in a people who have awakened from the slumber of apathy and complacency, a people who are on the move, on the march.

“We are grateful for the support and the trust that has been placed upon us by the people of Bermuda, but we recognize that we either rise or fall together, we either succeed or we fail together.

“So brothers and sisters let us remain steadfast and committed to the continued struggle for Equality, Jobs, and Justice, as we continue to struggle, “For the Cause that Lacks Assistance, For the Wrong that needs Resistance, For the Future in the Distance, And the Good that we can do!”

Pleeeeeease step down from the soap box bie”…As a matter of fact, all of you can do that…Enough is enough!

    • Sky Pilot says:

Raymond is right,we all heard enough of these people

    • Black Soil says:

How to the “peoples campaign” feel about the recently released Auditor Generals report on the Port Royal Golf Course?? Does the waste of the peoples money (the taxpayers money) mean anything to you?? No doubt you think it’s a conspiracy between the ever elusive white secret society and the Auditor General who has been brainwashed. You lot should be on your knees (Rev Tweed) thanking God that the PLP are no longer wrecking our island.

      • Black Soil says:

The “peoples campaign” are simply persons who cannot accept that the PLP lost the general election. Proof?? Well, if the PLP had won, the “peoples campaign” would not exist. Nuf said.

        • Triangle Drifter says:

A bunch of hypocrites. Nothing more. Nothing less. No surprises at all here.

          • ole Onion says:

One thing though the Ubp/Oba always stand united no matter how uneven the pie is being cut !! When will we put Bermuda first ? This party politics stinks ! Us , those , them , these !
Sounds like Nepotism and hippocrism !! Equality and Justice for all Bermudian citizens !!!!!!

    • Mockingjay says:

People Power a World Wide Movement
Get over it, its just an ongoing movement from our Freedom Fighters of yesteryear, and they had negative opposition then too, so you and your circle are doing what is required to do, according to History, that is !!!

      • aceboy says:

The leader is an expat on a work permit, taking a jawb away from a REAL Bermudian.

Why no gnashing of teeth about this?

      • hmmm says:

Free your mind, take off your self imposed shackles, for a belief that you are disadvantaged makes you disadvantaged, when there is none.

Success requires commitment and hard work. Begin at school and aim to be the best. Demand more work and more from the teachings.

Stop looking for excuses why you didn’t do so well and start changing your future today.

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

So they have their grand announcements on the steps of Hamilton City Hall…Why?

What does Hamilton or the COH have to do with this bunch?

Would not the steps of Rev Tweeds church, the steps in front of the HOA, in front of BIU, in front of BPSU headquarters or in front of Alaska Hall, be much more appropriate?

    Just wondering?

  3. Cookie Monster says:

Do you believe that in December 2012 the OBA became the Government not the so called people’s campaign ? Take a break! Where were all of you when the PLP took Bermuda to the brink of Bankruptcy?

  4. Terry says:

    Happy New Year to all.
May the people have a party next year.
    Shalom.

  5. jt says:

This group should have formed several years ago if they believe in their purported mission statements…and yet they would still not exist if the PLP had won the last election. All you need to know.

  6. Mutual Respect says:

    Another yawn-fest

  7. Brotherhood says:

OH … quit boring us with preachy, talking down to we ‘Brothers and Sisters”

    “PC” = PLP

Bunch of wanna be side runners

  8. Alvin Williams says:

The big lie and the herd mentality will exists among OBA political supporters well into the new year 2015- The struggle continues-

    • jt says:

And how would you depict the PLP supporters’ mentality as they watched the party hurl us into the abyss Alvin?
Lemmings I’d say. Struggle multiplied 10 fold under PLP…and you are 100% correct…the struggle they created continues.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

See that crowd in red in the covering picture? Now THAT looks like a herd. Eliminate all of the union members from the picture & how many do you think would be in it?

Also, what “big lie” are you talking about? Try to be specific. I don’t want to be outside listening to the treefrogs for too long.

    • Mockingjay says:

And dont forget the disillusioned dreamers who got hoodwinked by the OBA/ubp who are now kicking themselves in their ***.

    • hmmm says:

The only struggle is within yourself Alvin. Blame White, blame management, blame teachers, blame rich people, blame business, blame everyone BUT YOURSELF isn’t it.

Time you took on responsibility for what you did in life and quit blaming it on others.

  9. Navin Johnson says:

Have they actually achieved anything?.. Speeches here and there but that’s about it…..

  10. Dread says:

The people’s campaign is full of PLP hypocrites.
Tell us where the money went people’s campaign!

  11. ole Onion says:

One thing when it comes to being negative about PEOPLE Putting people first you always hear from a certain crowd !! Smdh !!! Let’s hear and discuss the facts provided by P.A.T.I !! Then we will know the truth of the past political parties Actions !!
I don’t support foolishness !! The peoples Campaign is a good thing ! They scared some political voices ! Bermuda shoots the messengers first especially if its not good news about themselves !
Politics or pile of tricks ? Are you smarter than a fifth grader ? Do you read the whole book before you do a book report ? Or do u just
    Jump on the bandwagon ?

  12. cj says:

At the end if the day, if you are completely honest, Tweed has absolutely nothing to offer other than imaginary assistance from his imaginary friend.

Better to actually get up and actually DO SOMETHING. Cos talking to that imaginary guy in the sky is the same as doing nothing.
