These positions join those we reported on yesterday, which included Graphic Designer, Event Manager, Community Outreach Manager, Receptionist, Client Services Manager and Video Editor/Camera Operator/Story Producer.

Update 2.53pm: The Government issued a response, it follows in full below

Responding to media reports and subsequent commentary regarding the advertising of employment opportunities associated with the 2017 America’s Cup, the Minister of Education and Economic Development, Dr. the Hon. Grant Gibbons, JP, MP, issued the following.

“From the outset I want to make it clear – it has always been and continues to be this Government’s commitment to ensure that Bermudians are afforded job opportunities associated with the America’s Cup, and any assertion to the contrary is regrettable,” Minister Gibbons said.

“It is unfortunate and indeed sad that the Opposition would attempt to imply that the job opportunities posted by the America’s Cup Event Authority [ACEA] on their website, AmericasCup.com, was somehow an effort to ‘hide jobs away’ from Bermudians so that they would not be able to apply. It’s an absurd suggestion, and nothing could be further from the truth. More specifically had the Opposition simply asked, they would have been advised that the ACEA has engaged a Bermudian recruiting firm to assist them with hiring Bermudians to fill these positions and others in the future.

“To be clear, the ACEA is very keen to recruit Bermudians for specific positions. In fact as a reminder, in an editorial contribution to The Royal Gazette on December 19th, Peter Rusch, Communications Director for the ACEA, stated they intended to hire a dozen Bermudians and that was just to start.

“At that time he referred readers to the jobs section on www.americascup.com. This was a beginning only. During December the ACEA were reviewing local recruitment companies to assist them in their recruitment efforts. They made a decision on the successful company recently and have been working with that company ever since. This will result in an advertisement appearing in The Royal Gazette early next week listing several positions that the ACEA is earnestly seeking Bermudians to fill. These jobs will also be posted on other online employment platforms and forums.”

Minister Gibbons stressed, “One of the strong points of our Bermuda bid for the 2017 Americas Cup was our assertion that the entire Bermuda community would be welcoming the events to Bermuda. The misplaced, inaccurate, indeed blatantly untrue allegations made yesterday, which spurred uncertainty and concern within our community work towards the exact opposite objective.

“It’s incredibly frustrating and disappointing that those making these allegations did not bother to contact any of us associated with the Americas Cup to seek further information or clarification – instead, they were quick to invent untruths and repeat unfounded rumours, which is tremendously counterproductive and unhelpful to the overall process of ensuring that we all work together for the good of Bermudians.”

Minister Gibbons concluded, “I know the ACEA are looking forward to reviewing applicants to the positions they will be advertising and in welcoming Bermudians to their team. I know they are pleased already by the initial responses which have been received from the website.”

Update 4.06pm: Acting Shadow Tourism Minister Jamahl Simmons said, “It is important that any and all on-island jobs related to the America’s Cup be posted on the Bermuda Government Jobs Board. With the ongoing Bermudian jobs crisis and $77 million taxpayer dollars committed to this important event, the PLP will work tirelessly to ensure that every Bermudian and not just a select few, benefit from the America’s Cup.”

  1. Triangle Drifter says:

Don’t get too excited. Having limited knowledge on what is needed in past experience in these jobs, it is still obvious that most of them need somebody who has done it before.

The Accomodation manager job would be a good fit for somebody who has been involved near the top of Bermuda tourism & has plenty of local contacts to draw on. Nice for somebody recently retired but still has the tourism itch.

    • Micro says:

All of them should have at least one qualified experienced Bermudian applicant, who hopefully will beat out other applicants. The media related positions should all have multiple qualified experienced Bermudians applying to them.

Aahh any blue collar jobs for us less technically and academically inclined?

I love your positive and realistic line of thinking.
You, my friend, will be sorted for employment as things ramp up down the road, kudos to you.

They are starting to come quietly. I know there are tradespeople already working to get some facilities ready, these kinds of things just don’t make the news.

    • Navin Johnson says:

Could you help build one of the new hotels or perhaps work in one?

  3. Excellent News! says:

It is amusing that good news is attracting cricial comments on these blogs.

Let’s be thankful for the immediate results seen in Bermuda since the announcemnt of Bermuda being chosen as an AC venue, just over one month ago. This is progress!!!

May our brethren look past the dialouge of the day and be a bit more optimistic about how this event can be good for our country.

    Have a blessed day!

  4. Ricko Chez says:

Just a thought: If the fumbling, bumbling, clueless PLP found these jobs – just how ‘hidden’ could they be?

Pathetic PLP grasping at straws again. Desperation isn’t pretty.

  5. Big picture says:

Big picture….if we want the AC to be a success and attract the tourism that we so desparately need, then does it really matter whether ALL of these jobs go to Bermudians or not? Surely the best candidate should be given the job, regardless. After all these are only temporary.

Of course if there is a fantastic, qualified Bermudian then they should definitely get the job over someone who is non-Bermudian, but if no such applicants apply then I hope that we don’t pass up on an expat candidate who could contribute to the success of the AC!

    • ahaa says:

All bermudians are qualified and have a world recognised qualification ….a birth certificate. it means that they are fully trained and ready to go from birth for any and all posts

  6. agatha christie says:

I hope that with the publicity Bernews is giving this, that people will now be aware of the Ac.com site – thank you Bernews.

  7. Quinton Berkley Butterfield says:

Thanks Bernews for sharing the links since if you go to the site, it is difficult to find these. I mean, who would have thought to look at Bermuda -> Join Us to find the job page (Usually there is a more apparent link), three levels down into the website. Good luck to all candidates!

    • Creamy says:

I’m not sure if you’re being serious. “Join Us” is a well-used internet phrase with a well-understood meaning. And from the AC home page it take two clicks to get to the jobs list. It couldn’t be easier.

  8. somuchless says:

I am very technically inclined and it was hard to find the jobs as others have noted.

There should be a seperate link at the bottom of the page or in the drop down bat stating Jobs/Careers. Also the OBA and the AC should have made sure that these positions were listed on the Bda job board, etc. immediaty.

If I didn’t read the article on Bernews yesterday I would not have even known about the jobs.

  9. flikel says:

    Question,

In normal situations, work permits are only given for a job that has been advertised locally and of which there is no qualified Bermudian.

These jobs are not being advertised locally, are the exempt from the normal work permit conditions? Will qualified Bermudians be given priority, as is the case normally?

Or do the AC people have the necessary exemptions and can hire whomever they want, and bypass qualified Bermudians if they choose to do so?

    Can someone explain?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

From what I’ve seen they can do about whatever they like. They are going to hire the best people for the jobs. If they can find people familiar with very large sporting events & have done the jobs successfully before, then that is who they are going to hire.

These are not jobs that already exist here. They are not even fulltime jobs with a career path. Without the AC coming here the jobs would not be here for anyone. None of the work that Bermudians are already getting & will be getting would even exist.

It is an awful shame seeing the negative misleading spin on what will be a great thing for Bermuda.

    • Edmund Spenser says:

Since these are relevant questions and nobody answered, I’ll give it a shot based on my understanding of the process (ie no guarantees this is 100% but should be close

      1. These jobs are being advertised locally, Bermuda does have the internet, we’re not that backward.

      2. I believe the question you meant to ask, does advertising on this webpage count for work permit advertising requirements, my understanding is no. To qualify for work permit purposes these should be advertised in the legal gazette. If a qualified Bermudian can’t be found based on these advertisements they would still need to be advertised in the legal gazette for the proper number of days before a work permit could be issued.

3.The Americas Cup web page clearly states
“The America’s Cup is coming to Bermuda, with the America’s Cup World Series in October 2015 and the main events in 2017. There is opportunity for all Bermudians to come together and get involved. Learn more here.”
on the page where you can look-up job and volunteer opportunities. If you truly intended to exclude Bermudians you wouldn’t talk about opportunities for Bermudians, at the very least you would be silent and just list the jobs, if you meant to exclude Bermudians from the process, hiding the jobs listing under “Heh Bermudians look here for opportunities” is not going to be very effective.

    • ahaa says:

well for one these are not Bermudian jobs, you are not necessarily entitled to them. These jobs should go to people with picture perfect job skills…people that can actually bring something to the post… AC people most likely

  10. people please says:

    1) this is an international entity who has never operated in Bermuda nor is it aware of conspiracy theories and the sordid history of our immigration issues. weirdly it probably assumes we are a sophisticated forward thinking nation….

    2) it, like most entities in the world advertise through their website first. this only went up this week. I mean literally…this week

    3) you are creating an issue out of nothing for what purposes I don’t know. Should you not in the least allow them time?

    4) see point 1 above

    5) they have said they wish to hire bermudians – if you truly believe that an international sporting team who has no concept or understanding of our stupid little insecurities will “lie” or attempt to deceive or hoodwink Bermudians out of jobs there is no hope for you.

    6) they don’t have to hire bermudians in the act. they are still looking to do so despite this

    7) if you have concerns or worries that somehow this is going to be bad for Bermudians and is not transparent how about you at least wait for evidence.

    8) comments that it is hard to find the adverts applies to all people and nations does it not? what is the point? I guess if you think you can design their website better you should contact them and offer them your services

    9) please don’t mess this up for the rest of us. please please please.

    • Bermy Style says:

Exactly!! I’m looking to get up and succeed during this once in a life time event…those of you whiners looking for ways to sabotage this once in a lifetime event; give it a rest! A large majority of Bermudians are tired of your nonsense…how about being part of the solution for a change and not part of the problem! You know who you are…

  11. Jo Blo says:

New Jobs = Good News Period. Simple math…

  12. tom cooke says:

So what happens when the boats come here… is everybody going to whine that they are not working on them.. it’s like asking a regular mechanic to work on an F1 car….

  13. Raymond Ray says:

Why do “certain people” complain when looking a gifted horse in its mouth just blows my mind! We all know the fact that not everyone is qualified in “certain fields” and require them that are well versed in that particular field who will need others to assist where / when possible…This will / does put $ in their pockets where presently there isn’t any $ in them :-(

  14. Prayerfu says:

I know that the request that I am ma making does not fall in the realm of America’s Cup, but while so much money is flying around can somebody turn some attention to Sandy’s 360 . That is a facility that can be put to so much use by the community. I do think that this should e a government facility. I, as a senior sorely miss the water aerobics programme, which was, in fact, my only form of exercise. I have recently suffered a stroke and really need to exercise even more.

    Is anybody listening?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Looking for a handout? The AC is not a charity. It is a very big business. It is in the business & sport of promoting sailing.

Maybe you should approach the AC people with the view of renting your facilities for their training. Provide a service for the money you get.

  15. chipp says:

    3ooo more

  16. Cafe Au Lait says:

There wil be many many opportunities for Bermudians of all work types. The people who won’t benefit will be those who sit, do nothing, and complain on blogs.

The AC35 is quite literally a gift from beyond just when we need it. Stop complaining – get up and do something.

Does anyone honestly think this would be happening if the PLP was in power? Think again.

    Now – do something.

  17. Jarvis Trott says:

I have no dog in this fight, either from the OBA or PLP perspective. But the PLP has a point. The jobs posting aren’t easy to find on the America’s Cup site. There is no statement about preference being given to Bermudians. It looks like anyone can apply.

Dr. Gibbons did not need to come out swinging so self-righteously and with such indignation. What would he have lost to say “Thanks for the feedback. This is what we’ve said in the past and this is what we’re doing now. If we weren’t clear in communicating before, we’ll work harder to make sure we are in the future.” It costs nothing to take the high road.

If every step on the road to the America’s Cup generates this type of acrimonious back and forth between our two political parties, we are all going to be exhausted by the time the event gets underway.

We can do better than this.
