Police Launch Social Media Hashtag Campaign

January 8, 2015

[Updated] Following the recent spate of collisions which have resulted in three deaths in the past few days, the Bermuda Police Service Public and Media Relations Department is starting a grassroots social media campaign entitled “#drivesafelybdansavealife”.

A police spokesperson said, ”During the past few weeks we have seen an increase in road traffic collisions and the goal of this grassroots social media campaign is to start dialogue between road users and highlight the importance of “#drivesafelybdansavealife”.

“We are looking to have this phrase the most retweeted phrase for the next week on all social media networks.”

“So how can you get involved? We want all social media users to go on their accounts and create creative catch phrases, Memes and Vines around the hashtag “#drivesafelybdansavealife”.

“Social media users are encouraged to tag The Bermuda Police Service on the post for possible repost on the police social media accounts.”

Update 3.55pm: The BPS said they would also like to add #drivesafebda and #arrivealivebda to this campaign, adding that “these hashtags are simply to start conversation and dialogue with Bermuda’s road users.” The graphic above has been amended to reflect all three.

Good idea guys but ….. the # is waaaay too long. Make it #drivesafebda or something like that.

    • Serious? says:

My personal favourite is the effort to keep it short using the “n” savealife…

    • Shawn says:

This is pure BS. This is basically BPS doing something virtually so they don’t have to do something in the real world. If they believe that creating a twitter tag will change the island’s drivers bad habits instead of actually policing the roads, then maybe we should dismiss the entire police service and send start the twitter tag #FollowTheLaw. Would save use tons of money instead and would follow in the ideas of the current police practice on the island.

  2. Micro says:

    More talk and no action.

  3. Elsa says:

Snappy hash tag BPS.. How bout #NoMoreThirdLane #EnoughIsEnough #SlowDownIdiots ?

    • Hurricane says:

The so called third lanes are the least of our worries. Yes, they are a nuisance sometimes for us drivers but I don’t see them causing death on our roads

      • What are you talking about says:

I’d be willing to be that most cases of bike-on-bike collisions are due to both bikes being in the third lane.

        • Hurricane says:

I’d have to know what exactly what is being referring to “third lane” before I place any bet. I would when most refer to “third lane” they are not just talking about overtaking.

    • stunned... says:

      #dontdrivehot

  4. Oh ok says:

That hashtag is entirely too long. Why not just #drivesafelybda?

  5. wwatcher says:

nice idea but we couldn’t come up with a shorter hash tag jeez! you only get 140 charachters on twitter

  6. Yes I says:

That’s right. Tell the non-riders to leave the 3rd lane for those who use proper discretion. Perks of having a bike ;) )

  7. serengeti says:

I have a feeling the Bermuda Police Service Public and Media Relations Department likes long names.

  8. Tony says:

Waaaay too long for a hashtag, but it’s a better of way of reaching out to the mainly young knuckleheads who I guess wouldn’t read blogs such as this.

My suggestion is to ban overtaking. Simply put, anyone overtaking is, by default, breaking the speed limit.

I also have a question. If I ride along with my go pro on my helmet, and it records someone driving dangerously, can that be used in evidence?

Will the BPS be setting up a blog where safety ideas can be floated? We’re all in this together, after all.

  9. Jus' Wonderin' says:

Yeah this is gonna work smfh…

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Like praying & pleas of “Slow Down Bermuda”. Doing something without doing anything at all. Might make a few feel good about themselves however.

The carnage will continue until the BPS & the courts do their jobs.

The BPS needs to get out of the bushes, put their radar guns away & start booking for due care, dangerous driving & such while the courts need to back the BPS up by really nailing the repeat offenders.

  10. children and fools says:

the concept is to start dialogue not to be a be all and end all……its the little things….. as far as the hastag being to long….well It has people tallking

  11. Starting Point says:

    #safe

We say ‘safe’ all the time in our local slang, use that and connect it to the roads, #safe is all you need imo.

  12. Frustrated Motorist says:

That’s the most cumbersome hashtag I’ve ever seen.

  13. Wowsers says:

This campaign makes ZERO sense. Stupid hashtag, no strategy or content of their own to support it, and the demographic of 45-60 year old men that make up most of the serious accidents use Twitter and FB all day? NOT! #FAIL #StopHiringDinosaurs

    • LAUGHABLE says:

wowsers… FOr a campaign that makes no sense your surely talking about it…. Things that make you go hmm??? At the end of the day its starting a convo around road safety… Something I don’t see you doing anything about…

    • serengeti says:

      Another myth starting there.

    • watching says:

the hash tag is definitely too long, but to correct the driving culture you have to start with the youth, so in that regard I think the idea is fine.

    • Tony says:

Not so sure about your 45-60 yr old accident-causing demographic!

A simple matter of the police doing their job would be a major step forward.

    • somuchless says:

I do not agree to your comment.

  14. good start says:

wow if people put as much time into at least trying to help rather than critiques we will be in a better spot

  15. seeeee says:

Its working got yall talking aready………no if only people would only slow down

how is this for a long hastag #iustburiedmysonandithurtsslowdown

  16. #bermylivin says:

    #nottrending

  17. #hashtags are as long as you want them says:

Rules are made to be broken, In the world of social media right is wrong and wrong is right, all the things they used to say not to do in traditional media is now being done on social media. The hashtag is just fine if it is retweeted…. 140 are the maxium charactters for twitter their #phrase is 25 long but not unheard of. In many effective social media campaigns have had very similar hashtags and it has worked. We need to relax and not get caught up in the small stuff and see the Bigpicture……..#bermystopmajoringinminors

  18. Let's Be Real says:

    Interesting thought…. #savealifebda or #drivesafebda might be a better option…

It would be more consequential however to think how we could save some of the lives we lose on our roads every year. Considering a vast majority are alcohol-related accidents, wouldn’t it be more effective to identify why we are drinking and driving? But if I’ve had a few too many drinks at 3 am on a Thursday night can I….
    - take the ferry home? definitely not
    - take the bus home? not a chance
    - take one of the free taxis? It’s not Friday…so no
    - take a taxi home? If I can find one…It would be particularly good luck to be able to convince one to drive me to Somerset… especially if I look particularly drunk and might vomit in their taxi..
    - drive home?
    – without being stopped? My odds are pretty good, I’d say
    – and not be arrested even if I am stopped? Several of my friends have been sent on their way on foot with no legal repercussions so….
    – and even stop at Ice Queen for greaze on the way? Sounds like a plan.

  19. #hashtagistoolong says:

Just incase nobody who planned this could already tell, Hashtags were made to make search terms and trending topics online easier to find with less to type. #havingahastaglikethismakesnosense

  20. Ricko Chez says:

When I was coming up,it was mandatory 3 years off the road if you got caught speeding over 40 mph (63 km). I also got booked for going through a stop sign (my wheels didn’t come to a complete stop). It was also mandatory jail if you got caught driving while disqualified.

Guess what? people obayed the law in those days. We were afraid of getting caught. Now it is just a joke. Speed whenever you want – slap on de wrist – if you get caught that is. Most likely you won’t.

  21. Terry says:

    Hashtag/smash tag.
You all want to blame the police and their media once again.

    See^ who is responding.

    It works.
    Shalom.

  22. Mr. Meoff says:

At the end of the day, people STILL CHOOSE TO RIDE AND DRIVE LIKE IDIOTS. All this fancy mumbo jumbo will have little effect, never has never will.
POLICE need to be more active on the radar gun, cycle squad were a factor to be feared back in the day, not anymore. Why, other serious crime has taken over and occupies huge police staffing. 10 years ago the Police would set up regular radar traps island wide every day and moterists feared that. Now, everyone drives faster by at least 10kph,knowing that they can. This is the only way this is going to have an effect. Instill fear in moterists that if you speed, you will get caught. Come on Babylon, get back in dem trees and come catch us speeders.

    • Herb says:

well yesterday I saw 5 police traps in operation, so something is definitely happening for the BPS lets hope it continues.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

Yup, the easy way. Set up speed traps. Meanwhile the third laning continues, the overtaking on corners continues, the yapping on the phone continues, the failing to slow down never mind stop at intersections continues, the double parking in chicken lane continues, the excessive noise continues. But hey, business is good on Kindley Field road where they can pick em down at 50k even though the road is perfectly safe for that speed & some.

      • PBanks says:

Herb, where were the police spots located, as a curiosity?

  23. somuchless says:

Change the hashtag to something shorter and make stickers so people can pit them on their cars, etc.

  24. Landscaper of the Mind says:

stupid choices and stupid driving make you a stupid person.
stupid people cause accidents in which even normal people get hurt.

Stupidity is the problem. Don’t do stupid.

Speed is not the problem, and grow up Bermuda and raise the limit in areas to 40mph or more like the rest of earth!

I am killed almost every other day, sometimes a few times in one day (!!) by stupid drivers!

    8. Lunging out of an entrance without caring or looking
    9. Only looking one way instead of both
    10. Swerving over the centre line even when not drunk
    11. Driving so close to the sidewalk or wall that you scrape it
    12. pulling out infront of oncoming traffic onblivious to the laws of physics
    13. driving right behind someone else or alongside them
    14. overtaking in cars or four wheeled vehicles
    15. overtaking in cars BETWEEN two motorbikes!!!!! (happened to me on east broadway rumble strips with a purple Lancer sedan!!!!!)
    16. Going slower than 35kph (Johnny Barnes and other seniors!)
    17. Going slow and suddenly turning without indicating!
    18. not indicating!
    19. failing to see objects in road and then swerving
    20. objects falling off cars or trucks lethally endangering drivers behind
    21. DRIVING DRUNK – super stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    22. Teenage losers trying to look cool and pulling stunts or nips on their lame bikes!!!!!!
    23. Taxi drivers doing whatever they feel like in total disregard for logic or law
    24. Women who cannot drive scooters teetering and tottering everywhere as they drive 35kph because THEY CANNOT DRIVE!!!!!!!

  25. tom cooke says:
