Bulk Carrier Diverts For Injured Crew Member

A Bulk Carrier traveling from Gibraltar diverted to Bermuda on Saturday [Jan 10] after a crew member suffered a head injury and a dislocated shoulder after taking a tumble on deck in heavy seas. The injured 42 year old was transferred by pilot boat to Ordnance Island, then transported to hospital for treatment.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On Thursday 8th January 11:44pm, RCC Norfolk contacts RCC Bermuda to advise of a Bulk Carrier coming from Gibraltar, bound Philadelphia, USA. The M/V CMB MAE intends to divert to Bermuda in order to conduct a MEDEVAC of an injured crewman.

“The ETA for the vessel is Saturday evening. Staff at RCC Bermuda commence making arrangements for the Medical Transfer of the 42 year old Filipino, who has suffered a head injury and a dislocated shoulder after taking a tumble on deck in heavy seas.

“The vessel arrives at the transfer position 5nm East of St Georges Harbour on Saturday 10th at 5:30pm. A local Doctor and the Pilot board the vessel from the Pilot Boat St David. The casualty is transferred to the Pilot Boat, and taken ashore where the local agent drives him to KEMH for treatment.

“Shortly after 6pm, the M/V CMB MAE continues on her journey to Philadelphia. The crewman remains in Bermuda awaiting repatriation to his homeland.”
