Support Staff, Tech Team To Provide Support

January 26, 2015

The Ministry of Education said the “support staff and technical team will be working diligently with all school principals to provide needed support” for public schools as they open today [Jan 26], with members of the Bermuda Union of Teachers [BUT] expected to attend the meeting called by the BTUC this morning.

A spokesperson said, “The Government has made the decision that all public schools will be open today [Monday, January 26]. Parents should note that Principals will be at their respective schools to supervise students.

“The Ministry of Education contacted the Bermuda Union of Teachers [BUT] requesting that they assist in ensuring that a ‘skeleton crew’ be available at schools to ensure the safety of students.

“However the BUT Executive stated that they could not support the Ministry’s request, as they could not ask their membership not to attend the meeting due to the important decision[s] that had to be made.

“Therefore, the Ministry of Education’s support staff and technical team will be working diligently with all school principals to provide needed support.

“The Ministry is cognizant of the many questions that parents might have concerning the operation of schools, and will keep parents and the public apprised of any new developments that may occur during the course of the day.

“We must all hope that the issues over which the industrial action has arisen are resolved as soon as possible.”

One of the reasons given as to why this urgent meeting couldn’t be held on the weekend was because people have families etc. and have to look after their children. Well, now that the schools are closing and the parents are out meeting and marching, I’m assuming that any friends or relatives that may have been able to babysit on the weekend are at work. So who’s going to watch them now? Also, how many parents can’t get to their children’s school because there’s no public transportation, which also means that older children can’t get home. Who is really feeling the brunt of this? My personal opinion is that this meeting was scheduled for this morning to cause maximum disruption, and it’s certainly achieving that goal. Plus, it’s no point in marching to the Cabinet Office on the weekend when there’s no one there to see you, is there? I would urge you all to look at the whole picture with eyes wide open.
