Pimentel Finishes First Day Of ISAF World Cup

January 28, 2015

Cameron Pimentel experienced the full brunt of the weather during Monday’s [Jan 26] opening at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Miami as conditions ranged from sunny and bright to storming and sideways rain.

Robert Scheidt, winner of five medals at the Olympiads, was quoted on the regatta website as saying, “A windy, tough day; this early in the regatta the goal is to avoid the big problems.”

At times, with the wind approaching 30 knots, it wasn’t possible to see through the rain and find the marks on the course.

The Laser fleet is currently split into two distinct fleets, which after four races will split once again, with the top half of the overall fleet racing in the ‘gold fleet’ and the remaining half competing in the ‘silver fleet’.

Mr. Pimentel, who is sailing in the ‘Blue Fleet’ at the start of the regatta managed only a 44th out of 57 boats, but was generally pleased to have avoided the big problems on day one.

Mr. Pimentel said, “The conditions were unbelievably difficult, but you have to expect it now and then. I’m here to race and do my best, so when the flag drops and the race starts, I have to deal with whatever comes my way. Today was all about finishing the races, so tomorrow my goal is obviously to try and improve upon my overall position.”
