Four Students Complete Post-Graduate Diploma
Four local students — Jodi Rick Maronie, Crystal Richardson Trott, Rosina Hardtman and Oranthus Turner — recently completed requirements for the post-graduate Diploma in Education from the School of Education at the University of the West Indies [UWI] – Mona campus.
The pilot programme, begun last February, features dual-mode delivery – streaming live via video-conferencing to students at Bermuda College, and face-to-face to students at the UWI Mona campus – allowing students to complete the one-year teacher training programme without having to physically leave their home countries. The Open Campus in St. Lucia, and the Western Jamaica Campus also participated.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education provides prospective teachers the opportunity and flexibility to upgrade their skills in education. In the pilot programme, the UWI School of Education offered specialisations in mathematics, English Language and Information Technology, which constituted the first part of the follow-on Masters of Arts in Teaching. All four Bermuda students successfully completed the requirements for the mathematics specialisation.

To be eligible students have to possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in the specialised areas, and are required to be either teaching in the specialised area, or be available to attend lectures and complete the requisite one-semester teaching practicum.
Co-ordinator of External Programmes at Bermuda College, Dr. Ameenah Ahad said the College was delighted to be able to offer yet another pathway to teacher certification on the Island, saying: “This programme is only a year long, is comparatively inexpensive, and meets the needs of the Ministry of Education for teacher certification. Additional subject areas, such as science and modern languages were added for the 2015 intake.”

Is there sufficient support for new teachers in Government Schools? One semester of teaching practice is very very little and a structured mentor programme is vital.
Also, would it not have been more suitable to try and link up with a UK university if we are hoping to increase our students chances of attaining IGCSE’s?
