Govt: Rainfall, High Tide To Coincide Thursday

February 18, 2015

[Updated] Tomorrow morning’s [Feb 19] high tide coincides with a period of forecast heavy rainfall so places that usually flood [Mills Creek, Bakery Lane etc] may be severely affected tomorrow morning, the Government said this evening.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] has advised this afternoon that there is currently a warm water eddy in our area with elevated sea heights of 30cm, which is roughly 1 foot above normal.

“As a note, tomorrow morning’s 8.30 a.m. high tide coincides with a period of forecast heavy rainfall – thus combined with the added influence of the warm water eddy – those places that usually flood [Mills creek, Bakery Lane, waterside grass verge of Kindley Field Road etc] may be severely affected tomorrow morning.

“The public will be aware that the month of February has seen considerably intemperate weather, and residents are encouraged to stay abreast of local weather updates from ‎the BWS. Updates and advisories can be followed online via www.weather.bm and on CableVision Ch. 4 or WOW Ch. 100.”

The BWS has issued a Gale Warning valid for late this afternoon to tonight, and a Thunderstorm Advisory valid for this evening through Thursday morning.

Update Feb 19, 8.52am: As of 8.30am this morning [Feb 19], the heavy rainfall has caused some flooding across the island, with reports of traffic being slowed in some areas due to floods, while a section of Palmetto Road is blocked off and traffic being diverted. Click here to see photos.
