Intoxicated Female Walks Away From Taxi Fare

February 15, 2015

Police are appealing for assistance in locating a female who, in what was apparently an intoxicated state, walked away from a taxi driver in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A police spokesperson said, “Police responded to an incident that took place at 1am on Saturday February 14th on Harbour Road in the area of Burnt House Hill.

“Upon arrival officers spoke to the complainant a taxi driver who informed the police that around 1am he collected a single fare from ‘The Beach’ on Front Street, Hamilton.

“The complainant took the female subject to a residence on Harbour Road, when he arrived the female got out and sat on a wall and began to fidget with her phone. The complainant informed the subject that she owes $31.65, to which she said she paid.

“The subject was intoxicated and began to walk toward Harbour Road. The complainant attempted to follow her but she vanished somewhere along Harbour Road, Warwick.

“The subject was described as being late teens to early 20 years of age. She is described as a white female with black straight hair, last seen wearing black high heels, black stockings and a blue top.

“Officers conducted a thorough search of Harbour Road, Burnt House Hill, Tamarind Vale and all surrounding areas however with no luck finding any person matching this description.

“Police are appealing for anyone who can assist in this matter to contact police on 295-0011.”

  1. Self says:

So are they concerned about this young, intoxicated female or the almighy dollar??

    • Kandee says:

Duh! That is stealing so yes the almighty dollar.Intoxicated or not wrong is wrong and she still owes the fare. If a drunk driver strikes Somebody with their car they are still bought before the law. If she don’t know How to drink in moderation then stay home!

      • Self says:

Well when I read the first line I thought something terrible had happened to her or she went missing or something. She’s a fare dodger. Not like that hasn’t happened a million times before.

    • Hurricane says:

I would hope that they would be more concerned about “the almighty dollar”. If she want to drink, so be it; just pay up.

    • Cardine Alice says:

Dolla. Not concerned about a clearly incapable, intoxicated, vulnerable young woman at all. Shameful.

    • Mockingjay says:

@ Self, would you have the same sentiment if it were a Black girl from Parsons Road ?

  2. High road says:

    Gotta love alcohol!!!

  3. Paul Revere says:

    Say it ain’t so.
A drunk white female committing a crime.
    Nah, not in Bermy

  4. Jim says:

$31.65 for a single fare from Front Street to Burnt House Hill???????

My god, I can only imagine what the tourists think when they get taxi fares like this..

    Pure insanity

    • Zario says:

Fares go up after midnight. Just sayin.

      • JR says:

come on .. that is a lot to go for like 3 miles ride , at that fare you sure he didn’t pick up at the airport!

      • c says:

and they wonder why people drink and drive…

    • Whistling Frog says:

I was thinking the same thing. I see why she cut a trail…

    • boss says:

I can only imagine that they think Bermuda is an expensive destination – maybe that ReInsurance execs pay over the top for everything and it has something to do with it.. just maybe…

  5. Ed Case says:

Wow she must have been pretty quick in those high heels. No wonder the taxi driver couldn’t catch her.

  6. Jus Wonderin' says:

Taxi driver needs to get in shape..she burnt you with heels on lmfao!

  7. D says:

shes was drunk leave her alone

    • boss says:

She was drunk and committed a crime – I wonder if you have the same views when an out of work mother steals a loaf of bread and is placed before a judge and sentenced?

  8. KeepCalm says:

She’s probably safe and sound sleeping. It is quite possible that she did not want the driver dropping her off at her exact location. On occasion, I’ve felt uncomfortable with the driver knowing where I stay because he’s tried to make a pass at me.

    • Island sistah says:

That doesn’t explain her failure to pay the fare………

      • Self says:

She was DRUNK. She told the driver that she paid, and in her drunken state she probably thought she had. At least she caught a taxi, instead of driving and killing somebody. I hope when she sobers up, she reads this and does the right thing and pays the driver.

        • Cardine Alice says:

If you really want to waste police time allow me some legal advice – she lacked capacity to commit an offence if you are seriously suggesting theft. Of course you aren’t. What happenede to the special get people home safely campaign that used to operate at 3am or something ?

    • RS says:

      Excuses

  9. ImJustSayin says:

$31:65 from Front Street to Burnt House Hill. I’d walk away also.

    • Mockingjay says:

So what if I walk in a shop drunk and get a loaf of bread for $6 and tell the cashier I paid for it and walk out.

  10. Chingas says:

This is why we need to introduce Uber or something of that nature….Ridiculous pricing, I would have looked at the drive cross eyed if he said that was the fare. Get real!

    • Raw Onion says:

Uber would have cost you twice as much.

      • Chingas says:

hm…so you are saying an Uber would have costed $63? I highly doubt it, Uber may have surge pricing but surely not that degree…Would be interesting if something of Ubers’ nature was introduced to the island…

        • Cardine Alice says:

Use Über all the time. Quite reasonanble and if you can’t afford them take a night bus.

        • RoseAnn says:

Something like Uber is on the Island.
Driver should submit bill to CADA
Drunk female without money should not CADA free rides exist

  11. ImJustSayin says:

What’s the difference between night and day? Only the Sun is up in the day. So are the fares increased at night? SMDH!

    • Eyes wide ''OPEN'' says:

Would you work for str8 pay after midnight? I’m just saying peps to critical this is Bermuda

      • Terry says:

        Yes.
My Father did it for 40 years.

        • Taxi teed says:

Okay Terry, your Dad did, but would you? BTW Menu Prices and Alcohol usually costs more at night as well. Why shouldn’t a taxi ride cost more.

    • Mixitup says:

The difference between night and day you ask? Go back and read the story… Note the time of day. That’s the difference between night and day, foolishness like this.

  12. ShadyBda says:

taxi prices are ridiculous, don’t blame her

    • Eyes wide ''OPEN'' says:

So are you suggesting that we walk out the grocery store without paying everyone know how expenses they are hmm trying to get my head around your thought processing

    • Hurricane says:

The prices of everything here is ridiculous. Dose that mean we don’t have to pay for anything? Duhhhhhhhh

  13. MB says:

Really?? How about some same concern for the intoxicated and unintoxicated MANY who can’t get a cab cos cabbies can’t be bothered to do their jobs. Sorry no sympathy from me,

  14. Creamy says:

    Idiotic comments from total losers.

    • but seriously says:

and yet you are here reading them. I guess you thought today they would be less idiotic than normal

    • Self says:

      Grow up Creamy.

    • Tommy Pickles says:

i assume you are a friends of hers lol..

      • Creamy says:

No. I was referring to the “I wouldn’t have paid either” type of comments.

  15. Positivity says:

An intoxicated female didn’t pay her cab fare? So what is there an APB out for her arrest? And yes the fares are ridiculous. The rates were increased and they still hike up the rates after midnights, on holidays, etc. I pay because we refuse to drink and drive and the big picture is, you can’t put a price on safety.
An alternative service with affordable set rates would surely provide some viable competition.

  16. Terry says:

These shoes are made for walking and that’s just what I’ll do and just last night I walked away from you…….
    LOve that song.

  17. Realistic says:

What about the taxi drivers who have been drinking at that time of night, I have been in several cabs when it probably would have been safer if I drank and drove myself!

  18. Get real says:

this is actually the best thing I’ve read in ages.
They can refuse to take people certain places because 1) it’s not far enough or 2) they can’t be bothered so right on to this girl!
I wouldn’t pay that fee either. I love the same distance away and only pay $15.
That can went the long way and took advantage. #welcometobermuda

  19. keisha says:

But isn’t taxis free after 12?

  20. Sam Steede says:

she could’ve stopped along the way or maybe while waiting to be paid the meter was still going so stop the foolishness about the price of the ride and look at the problem. She needs to be caught and deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law.

  21. Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

It doesn’t matter if the cab fare was exorbitant, and let’s face it, they are here, as many things are. She still committed a crime.

It is, however, possible that come the morning and/or sobriety she’ll rethink her actions and contact the police.

I will admit to being curious as to how the driver lost track of an intoxicated woman in heels though.

  22. Couch Sailor says:

Let’s look on the bright side. She didn’t get on her bike and become another statistic . The prices of taxi fares is why so many people drink and drive.

  23. The Truth and Nothing but the Truth says:

Vanished into the night ??? I`m sorry,, What? Sounds like somebody telling ghost stories !!!

  24. Raw Onion says:

Whether the fare was $5 or $50, she has to pay it. The second you set foot in a cab you make a agreement that you will pay what is on the meter upon reaching your destination. She wasn’t being cheated by the driver (unless he had the meter on the wrong rate which I have seen some drivers do) so she must pay up.
The fine from the courts will be much higher and her reputation will be that of a thief.
If the next day she realized she goofed up, come clean with the police, find the driver and pay him and I’m sure the charges will be dropped.

  25. somuchless says:

I think she hopped out and clicked her heals and vanished lol

  26. Wisdom before madness says:

Just reading your comment as the last in this furry of very damaging society of disrespectful bloggers. This came to mind just as I was thinking of all the lives the taxi industry has saved. The same time this young lady was evading the hard working taxi driver, I observed a young man getting on his bike in Hamiton. After a few minuets of advising him to take a cab along with others person trying to persuade him that he was not sober ride his motor cycle.. On top of that he was watching the police that was park near his bike move off ,this young man dicided to get on his bike and ride home. No longer after this I picked up a passenger and just so happen to come across the same young man being help out of the road at Crow lane and Jonny Barnes location. This young man near killed himself at a hotspot were many other have passed away due to the frequent accident spot. On top of that if you think this is just a made up story look down there at the bus stop the bike is there as I write (crow lane bus shelter) . Now having said that is $32.00 dollar still expensive as the life of this young person/ or should the small price of taken good advice prevail. It so damaging when people who sit behind the computer and write foolishness and brainwashing comment not realizing that the young children are reading and believing there crazy misleading comment. Just take a minute out to think about your love one child, sibling ,nephew, nieces, take cheap advise that I have read on this topic. So they decide to drive after drinking or walking 3 plus miles in the dark of the night , only to run into the danger out there voucher ready to pounce on this young lady. Then you read about a whole other story of cruel people taken advantage of a young lady walking home after spending her money at a bar feed poison at $12 buck a drink x 3= $36.. Now how would that feel when you the blogger have train the youth to think so irresponsible. Think first write responsibly.. Life is more precious then money..funeral cost, hospital ICU.cost and the law after you get caught drinking and driving cost..you need to think before writing foolish comment unless your recovering from a hard night of drinking then you maybe excused until you sober up. Bermuda we need to look at all matter with better judgment and order if you want to be helpful in society .. The world is already in a turmoil be a positive respectful blogger it goes along way to helping the ills of the world..

    • Terry says:

      And your point is what.
      Are you a Taxi driver?
      A good citizen?
      We all do good deeds.

    • Mixitup says:

You really beleive people want to read all that ^^^ gosh, I know it’s Sunday but you can’t be that bored.

    • Charlly X says:

Nailed it !!! @Wisdom B.M !! Not knowing all the facts and commenting is pure gossip. !! The fare to that location directly from Hamilton is less , he had been waiting for her to pay . No one knows exactly what really happened . And if you agree to the goods and service you have to pay .. If you are questioning a fare in a taxi ask the driver for a receipt and call TCD that simple . If you don’t like his/her behavior take the number of the vehicle , ask for a receipt report it to TCD simple ! Just like any other complaints you take them to management ! Laws need to be beefed up for people who abuse taxi drivers period ! Such as fare dogggers ! Throwing up in the taxi ! If you can pay for drinks , you can pay to get home !! The smell of human secretions pee ,Vomit and poop !! Doesn’t leave fast like the person WHO did it in the taxi ! The vomit dribbling out the window all along the car ! The smell The Smell !! The time it takes to clean it out/off thoroughly who’s paying n who’s loozing money !! Sorry didn’t don’t n won’t ! Pay my bills !! Can you go to the supermarket, gas stations and say I only have ten when the bill is twelve or thirty when the bill is forty ! Smh smh ! Drivers have to pay bills just like passengers !!

    • MB says:

Yes well where were the taxi drivers for Rebecca Middleton???System hasn’t changed since!
I think some SMART ‘bloggers’ here are trying to point out some VERY serious and legitimate concerns about the taxi industry in Bermuda I don’t consider that ‘disrespectful’. Are doctors and nurses and police patting themselves on the back for the lives saved. Dont think so. It’s their job. You might not be part of the problem here I agree but are you part of the solution?

      • onray balzac says:

Did you just mention Rebecca Middleton?!?! Bie take several seats!

  27. Bermy Bud says:

I thought taxi rides from front street were free after a certain time on weekends? Just another greedy ambassador on our island! SMH!!

    • Ann says:

Why don’t you go out there and drive drunk people home in your car????? There was a bus that used to run, but taxis were never free. Life is not free and I’m getting so tired of people thinking someone else should pay for them. If anything the bars should for letting people get so drunk!

  28. Ann says:

These comments are disturbing! The girl OWES for her cab fare, the cab driver needs money as well, she obviously had enough to go out and get loaded! Would you want to be a cab driver out there after midnight, I wouldn’t the way these people act lately!

    • Whistling Frog says:

I was told that women don’t need money when they go out to drink.

  29. somuchless says:

Looking at the bright side. At least she didn’t try to rob him or beat him up.

    • mixitup says:

      Ahhhh. she did rob him

      • somuchless says:

Lol but you know what rob I meant.

      • O'Brien says:

Technically, no. Robbery involves the use of force, or threat thereof. If she did as alleged, it’s plain and simple theft.

        • boss says:

Like stealing a miniature from the liquor store or a small item from the grocer – those folk get placed before a judge and sentenced – she needs to be treated in the same manner…

  30. Dark Star says:

$31 from the Beach to Burnt House hill——-did they stop at ice queen or something? go look at the cameras

  31. Tisk says:

Ace girl walked away drunk and the cabbie just sat there? Thats a little fishy if you ask me.

  32. Next says:

I’m sorry but the way this story is written I find this hilarious and the comments aren’t helping. How slow was he that he couldn’t keep up with a drunk chick in heels?

    • bi says:

Have you seen some of our cabbies? The guy that I call is at least 80. Some guys probably should not work midnights but they have to.

  33. Coffee says:

She needs to be punished .

  34. enough says:

It would be my guess, because it happens a lot, that the driver kept the meter running while he/she waited for either the woman to come and pay or the police to arrive. Not sure of the lagality of doing that, but I’d bet that was why the fare was so high.

  35. Onion Soup says:

What I would like to know is if the taxi driver or the police or, for that matter most of the people commenting here, were or are even remotely concerned about the safety of an intoxicated young woman wandering alone around Harbour Road at 1 a.m. I find it quite remarkable, and not in a good way, that that concern has not been raised.

  36. filobedo21 says:

I’ve not read all posts, but surely BPS should be viewing the tapes at The Beach, along with the taxi driver to locate this woman.

  37. MAKE MY DAY says:

She was NOT that *HOT*…. Because she sure knew how to getaway in a hurry!! She had NO intentions of paying in the first place or looked in her purse and saw that it was empty!!

  38. JUNK YARD DOG says:

Let them walk it off .

Taxi drivers run the risk of a drunk passenger throwing up in the taxi.

  39. aceboy says:

There is no justification for getting in a cab and then walking away from a fare. The colour of this woman’s skin doesn’t factor into the discussion. Wrong is wrong.
