List Of March 3rd & 4th Bus Run Cancellations

March 3, 2015

[Updated] A number of bus runs have been cancelled again today [March 3] the Ministry of Transport said, with the Ministry providing a list of  the specific runs that have been affected.

The cancellations have been an ongoing issue of late, and last week Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell said, “The Department of Public Transport currently has 10 bus operators who are out on long term sick leave and the service has been further impacted by operators out sick during this cold and flu season.

“In addition, the department has implemented a ban on overtime and the combination of these factors is impacting the scheduling of bus runs.”

The list of cancellations for today, as provided by Government, is below:

  1. Vote for Me says:

The bus cancellations are a travesty.

Unfortunately, without bold action with our national budget, such actions will become the norm!!

    • Mockingjay says:

This would’ve never happened under the P.L.P.
      Just Pathetic.

      • Raymond Ray says:

While we’re on the subject of better Governing try to answer the following question.
What’s your version of “transparency” and close friends and family connections? Following are very relevant point to be explained to the people of Bermuda:
Bermuda Housing Scandal? B.L.D.C. scandal. Berkeley Institute, Heritage Wharf, Port Royal :-( Transport Control Dept. This too was a signs of financial incompetence. Now how about these:Grand Atlantic; the Madame Lois Brown-Evans Court / Police Station Building – That Faith-based Tourism Fiasco also Global Hue and King Edward Memorial Hospitals Chief of Staff scandal. Here is another, “friends and family deal” The Dockyard Cement “issue”. Oh, and let us not forget this one, the Accountant General as well it’s second in command were put on Administrative leave just before last election. Tell us, what’s that all about? We are still waiting for some sort of transparency :-( Now the Spice Hill Orphanage scandal? I believe I could / should stop here because I too get pissed off (but I believe it’s better than being pissed on right :-( )

        • Mockingjay says:

I thought Scotland Yard investigated those ACCUSATIONS.
Meanwhile back at the Ranch, dealing with the matter at hand.
I agree P.L.P made some F!@#ups, now are you going to MAN UP to admit that O.B.A/ubp are F!@#ing up.
          TIC TOC.

        • drunken ursula says:

poor Raymond look at the scandal your OBA has started with their Friends and family benefit packages. There’s no differences from the PlP…

          • Raymond Ray says:

Stop looking for excuses, (Mockingjay, drunken Ursula and everyone else) just “man-up” yourselves and answer them questions I’d put forward…Anyone :-( Yeah right no-one from the “other side” can or will in’it?

      • Fallacypointerouter says:

The PLP has a plan to keep us all healthy and prevents sickness? Sign me up!
Seriously though, how does the fact that you have workers who are not able to work and I quote “10 bus operators who are out on long term sick leave and the service has been further impacted by operators out sick” turn this issue to a political parties fault. SMH, just crabs in a bucket eh.

  2. stunned... says:

Minister Crockwell do not give in: NO OVERTIME.

and, if this slackness persists – there are hundreds of qualified under/unemployed people who would be willing to do substitute driving.

    • Steve says:

This is an absolute joke. There are thousands of unemployed Bermudians, yet people fortunate enough to have jobs don’t even bother to show up.

    • Mockingjay says:

Which is more important, paying overtime to run the bus service efficiently or a sail boat race.

  3. This is crazy says:

Privatize! Hire new bus drivers who don’t call in sick out of spite!

If you have drivers out on long term sick leave you should hire temporary contractors at the very least.

  4. Cottereaux says:

This is just a practice run to determine the leverage for when the AC comes around and drivers will demand large salary increases just to show up for work. Driving tourists around will cost extra. What is the backup plan Mr. Crockwell?

    • hmmm says:

THE PLP would probably have bought more new buses (had grand announcements about them) not bothered to have the training for the skillset to maintain them. Let the union get away with employees who should have been fired for gross misconduct get away with it. Then get voted out and leave all the broken toys all over the floor of an empty unmaintained room with the baliffs banging at the door and put all the blame on the currently elected Government.

Ask yourself, if the PLP hadn’t spent all that money, would this even be a news article today?

  5. Guapo says:

This is a problem that has not been adequately addressed.

If our system is unable to cope during the winter months, how will be fair during the busier summer period?

The Minister’s explanation is received with thanks, however, it does not provide the community with solutions to the problems we are currently facing or the ones that we can glimpse quickly approaching in our rear view mirror.

    • Not exactly says:

Looks like the environment is ripe for some enterprising individuals to meet the market needs with private transportation solutions. At this rate the public buses will not be privatised by the politicians, but rather by the staff.

  6. Nonsense says:

This is so ridiculous! What they aren’t telling us is that there are actually more cancellations but they aren’t listed!!!!!!!! It’s so inconvenient but clearly the people’s needs don’t matter!

  7. just wondering says:

let me see if I get this straight – we have an overstaffed well paid civil service and yet our buses don’t run properly – mail takes days and days to move less than a mile – trash is often not collected – the public education system is horrible – so exactly why are those of us who are left with jobs paying tax????

  8. Creamy says:

Bean whines about “transparency” but says nothing about union members taking 14 weeks a year of fake sick days. Where’s the “transparency” in that, Bean?

  9. Sky Pilot says:

Privatize! …Fire them lazy lot of them

  10. Raymond Ray says:

2 words to rectify this crap, “fire / hire”. Aren’t u’lot tired of this ludicrous behavior displayed by the bus drivers and their Union? Time to privatize the services or at the very least, allow competition!

  11. DEE says:

TELL THE TRUTH, THEY ARE NOT BEING PAID OVERTIME, SO THEY ARE CALLING IN SICK. YES, THERE ARE SOME OUT SICK ON LONG TERM, SO HIRE SOME PART TIME QUALIFIED AND RELIABLE STAFF.
WE AS THE PUBLIC NEED TO BOYCOTT THE PUBLIC BUSES.
SO TO ALL THE MINI BUS OPERATORS, HOPE TO SEE YOU OUT THERE.
    HAD ENOUGH.

    • frank says:

maybe they should hire back some recent retires

  12. stunned... says:

hire SCABs in place of the overpaid, overpriviledged and undeserving bus drivers….

    S = Somebody
    C = Caring
    A = About
    B = Bermuda

  13. resa says:

I find it amazing that all these canceled buses and yet i have seen a lot of people learning to drive bus.. but gov doesnt wish to pay overtime? Y new drivers isnt that more money? That could pay the current drivers overtime yes?!

    • Mouseinthehouse says:

Sortof but wouldn’t new drivers presumably get paid a lower rate than experienced drivers? Particularly experienced drivers at time and a half. And new drivers might just be training to manage the long term sick leaves. Seeing drivers in training might be progress really.

  14. Longtaill says:

    Sounds like a undercover strike.

Wonder if some people could buy a bus and make their own transportation cause this s*** happens too much. 5$ rides

  15. Tony says:

I’ve said it before – this is simply a means of making the Government look bad by certain employees who had it easy under the PLP. Trust me, it’s rife within Government. Already low productivity rates are now even lower.

  16. Jessica says:

Firstly I think those who are workin hard and hav bought bus passes should get a refund on last month and this months pass….I also think we as a community should come up with a plan and work together to make a better Bermuda. All the goverment is around for right now is to create order because they already have wasted our money . If we’re gonna make this work we need to come up with a plan and put it into action. Really think ….if they were/are gonna be affected they would figure out something.

  17. ImJustSayin says:

If this was effecting the private schools. I would guarantee you something would be done,so this would not happen continuously…

    • Regina says:

If bus drivers (BIU) are dumb/selfish enough to do this to their own friends and family, then that’s their choice. I made it to work on time…kids dropped at school on my way. No skin off my teeth. Keep shooting yourselves in the foot though…brilliant plan.

    • Observer says:

      What a stupid comment.

    • Karma says:

The private school students rely on the bus too…how is this NOT affecting them?

  18. ImJustSayin says:

It’s just another example of extremely poor management.

    • Todd says:

‘Kinda’ like Greece, Spain, Italy, France, The US, et al

  19. bluebird says:

We sould not get excited as some are taking there 14 Weeks sick leave.
NO Overtime as they have been MILKING IT.
Over time at $90.00 an hour on a Sunday and holidays.

  20. in the trap says:

You all are falling in the trap that the public officials want you to fall in. A play of the private sector against the government workers. It is better to unite than let there be divide.

  21. bluebird says:

Privitize the busses, let private companies buy new busses ,employ bus drivers, keep them serviced and running and buy new busses when required.
Goverment would have additional tax revenue and stop the transport budget,at a great savings, including the fuel.
another way to balance the Budget.if you have the balls.
sorry mr binns Goverment produces nothing.
goverment just wastes tax payer money,

  22. Lisa says:

Government Workers have 8 uncertified sick days and up to 6 weeks Certified by a qualified doctor. If anyone is taking fake sick leave then there must be a lot of unethical doctors out there making A LOT OF MONEY off of the government workers. Think about that!!!

    • Todd says:

Clearly we have learned well from U.K. employees and I quote, “who are the world leaders at claiming sick leave, taking 4 times as many days off than some of their global colleagues (Asians), according to new research by PwC”.

Apparently, U.K. employees take 9.1 sick days per year and cost UK businesses nearly US$44,000,0000 a year (US$44BILION). This is twice as many as their US colleagues, and higher than their Western European colleagues who average 7.3 sick days per year.

  23. Huh says:

To anyone travelling in a car, please take the time to stop and see if you can help transport anyone waiting at a bus stop bus shelter. We can do this Bermuda!!

  24. I wish I was making there wage ! My job just announced that or hours are going to be shortened again . If I could have a chance to make what there making weekly believe me I would not complain . Oh to be a bus driver or a civil servant . It must be heaven to be able to pay your bills with the wage they make .
    Signed ; Private Sector Employee

    • somuchless says:

A bus driver makes just under $1100 a week. Of course that is before deductions.

  25. Reply to smuchless ; believe me that is three times what I’am taking home as pay per week . Try living off of that !! They should keep there mouth shut , stop complaining and get back to work . One day in the near future there might not be a job to go back to because ” Joe Public ” might just say enough is enough ! Privatize all Government transportation .It is coming !!!!!!

  26. Hey there mockinjay…. to you… I must say… Birdship! neither the buses nor ferries were able to even do rudimental maintenance of there transport… they were Baudouin able to function… buses at the terminal and three ferries at the dock, skelitan crew operation whatcwas left just before the election that removed police!…
    .

  27. So… tweety………. it is this sort of thing makes me very happy bulls don’t fly!
