Man Pleads Guilty To Assaulting A Police Officer

Appearing in Magistrates Court today [Mar 23], a 25-year-old man received a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer, with the Court hearing the incident occurred inside Hamilton Police Station.

Sean Evans pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting a police officer on 21st March 2015, with the Court hearing this happened as the police officer was attempting to secure Mr Evans in a cell inside  Hamilton Police Station.

According to evidence read-in by the Prosecutor, during the struggles police used a taser to help subdue Mr Evans.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced him to six months in prison, and suspended the sentence for twelve months.

The Magistrate also ordered that Mr Evans should serve a twelve month probation period and abstain from alcohol and drugs during this period.

In his defence, Mr Evans said that he was highly intoxicated that night and believed that someone had slipped something into his drink.

    Huh? Am I reading right? A man assaults a police officer in uniform and gets a suspended sentence? Honestly, if a man can assault a police officer in uniform he deserves a custodial sentence. I would never think of assaulting a person in authority. If he can do that to a police officer what would he do to a regular person.

      I hear you however, a lot depends upon the testimony of the police officer and what the defendant actually did, details that were not included in this story.
