Bermuda MMA Retreat To Feature UFC Legend

March 2, 2015

A unique experience is set to be offered in Bermuda for the first time, with a well-known Ultimate Fighting Championship [UFC] competitor visiting the island in order to provide an opportunity to train with a world-class mixed martial artist.

Former TKO Featherweight champion Mark “The Machine” Hominick will be the featured fighter for Bermuda’s first Mixed Martial Arts [MMA] Retreat Weekend, with the event being hosted by Bermuda Combat Club [BCC], which specializes in training that includes Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, wrestling, Muay Thai, boxing, self-defense, and more.

The event will take place April 3, 4 and 5, 2015 at Crossfit BDA, in the form of a retreat weekend geared toward individuals who are interested in doing something new involving fitness, health and wellness, as well as those who may already be athletes or fighters.

On April 6, Mark Hominick will be giving an inspirational speech at CedarBridge Academy to school staff and leaders, as well as at-risk youth regarding anti-social behaviour.

BCC Director and CEO Mark Prior said, “As a Bermudian, I am proud to be able to bring new, exciting ideas to my country that not only suit my passion for martial arts, but fit well with what the Bermuda Tourism Authority highlighted in their Tourism Summit in January.

“We are bringing a new era of training to Bermuda that is inclusive of every one of all fitness levels and athletic and combative ability. As pioneers in bringing the MMA industry to Bermuda, we value fostering and promoting local talent. We strongly believe that locals should not have to leave Bermuda to participate in their health, fitness and combative sport goals.”

A spokesperson for the BCC said, “The BCC is Bermuda’s first and only sports tourism-orientated business to provide elite martial arts training, fitness and health services to residents and visitors alike. Our mission statement is train with the best to achieve the best in martial arts training, fitness and health.

“The BCC strives to have effective fitness and martial arts techniques taught by the world’s best professional fighters, in a fun, engaging format of seminars in order to encourage a healthy lifestyle and growth in the local combative sports scene.”

Mark “The Machine” Hominick introduces the Bermuda seminar:

“Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world, made mainstream by the Ultimate Fighting Championship [UFC] over the past 10 years. Taking advantage of the sport’s exponential growth worldwide and bringing it to Bermuda for the first time is a tremendous opportunity.

“Not only are there large fan bases and groups of athletes locally that are interested in MMA, but the same demographics abroad would definitely benefit from an opportunity to vacation in Bermuda and train with a high calibre fighter in paradise.

“BCC will be bringing world famous professional MMA fighters from the UFC as well as other prominent organisations to deliver a unique training experience that Bermuda has never before seen. Whilst these elite fighters are here in Bermuda they will conduction educational seminars on their techniques and health and fitness training.

“In addition to this event, the BCC will structure similar events to take place throughout the year.

“Major sponsors such as Fairmont Southampton, Crossfit BDA, Outback Sports Bar and Coconut Rockets Flyboarding all see the value in this initiative and have gladly come on board to offer their unique services in order to enhance the sports tourism aspect of the experience.

“Mark Hominick reaches and interacts with thousands of fans, in both the MMA and the fitness world. He has fought for several popular organisations like the World Extreme Cagefighting [WEC] and the UFC, where he spent most of his career.

“He’s known for his exciting technical and fast striking style that never fails to entertain, which got him a very successful career.

“Mark is currently marketed through the UFC, and is in television shows which have 11 million likes on Facebook and 1.3 million followers on Twitter.”
