20 Foot Disabled Powercraft Towed To Shore

April 13, 2015

A good Samaritan boat owner towed a vessel to shore on Friday [April 10] after it became disabled off the South Shore with three people onboard.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Bermuda Radio receives a call from persons onboard the 20ft powercraft Moby Dick advising they were disabled approx 1 mile South off Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, South Shore.

“Bermuda Radio commenced urgency broadcasts on VHF Chanel 16 requesting any vessels in the area who could assist the 3 persons on the disabled vessel. A local vessel Modern Sinbad kindly offered assistance and towed the stricken vessel safely into Ely’s Harbour.

“This incident is a timely reminder of the importance, of having a VHF Radio in working condition and switched on listening to Channel 16 when offshore, providing the ability to be aware of any urgent and possibly distress situations that may be occurring to other Mariners at Sea.”
