Clinical Guidelines Symposium On May 9th

April 30, 2015

On Saturday May 9th local healthcare professionals will gather together at the BUEI for the Clinical Guidelines Symposium to discuss the topic of evidence based ‘health screenings’.

A spokesperson said, “The aim of the symposium is to inform the healthcare community, particularly the physicians, on the importance of screening appropriately; that is, screening in accordance with evidence-based guidelines.

“A further, related aim is to expose the healthcare community to the US Preventive Services Task Force Guidelines which have been selected by a working group of professionals as suitable guidelines for Bermuda.

“The symposium – which is offered at no cost to attendees -has been organized by a collaborative group comprising the Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment, the Bermuda Medical Council, the Bermuda Medical Doctors’ Association, the Bermuda Health Council, and the Bermuda Hospitals Board.

“The two featured lecturers are visionary health leaders who are expected to have much to contribute to the current narrative on inappropriate medical testing and potential harms. Dr Gilbert Welch, of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, is author of Overdiagnosed: making people sick in the pursuit of health, and the recently released, Less Medicine, More Health whileDr. Michael LeFevre is Immediate Past Chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force, which is a leader in recommending evidence-based clinical guidelines.

“The invitation to attend the symposium was extended to all registered physicians on the island as well as the community practice nurses and other health system partners, such as charities and insurers.

“The Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment the Hon. Jeanne Atherden JP MP will offer opening remarks.”

“Bermuda’s health outcomes are not impressive given the financial investment made,” said Minister Atherden. “Our rates of chronic non-communicable diseases and most importantly, the rates of complications from these diseases, are among the highest in the developed world.

“The Ministry and our health partners are concerned about Bermuda’s complication rates for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, chronic lung disease and obesity. Improving these outcomes will require a focused effort on the part of the health care community. This means collaborating closely as professionals and assuring we are all offering the highest quality, most evidence-based care we can.

“Therefore the goal of the symposium is to unify the healthcare community around the vision of providing quality care through evidence-based clinical practice. We want all patients to receive a high standard of care that is based on solid scientific evidence that it works. We also want to limit the harm caused by excessive and inappropriate diagnostic testing. The information to be shared at the symposium will raise the understanding of what is appropriate testing and what is excessive and inappropriate.”

The Symposium will take place at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] on Saturday May 9th from 8am to 1 pm.
