Clarien Bank Donating Saplings For Earth Day

April 20, 2015

Clarien Bank Limited today [Apr 20] announced free sapling donations in celebration of Earth Day.

Three hundred native and endemic Bermuda Cedar, Palmetto and Olive Wood saplings will be donated to clients and residents on Wednesday, April 22.

The community sapling event will be followed on Friday, April 24 by plantings of saplings at Gilbert Institute and Somerset Primary to help make their campuses green again.

The Earth Day sapling donations continue the Bank’s Reforestation efforts which began with a sapling giveaway to clients and residents in October 2014 following the impact of Hurricane Gonzalo and Tropical Storm Fay.

Since then, Clarien’s reforestation efforts have continued with donations of saplings to WindReach Bermuda and Somerset Primary.

Michael DeCouto, CMO Clarien Bank, commented: “Clarien’s Reforestation project began with the idea that we can all work together collectively to help replenish our beautiful, lush island home.

“We invite the entire community to join us in helping to plant the endemic saplings throughout the island and help Bermuda grow a great green future.”

The saplings will be offered on a first come, first served basis from 11am to 2pm, while supplies last. Full advice will be provided to customers and residents wishing to take part in this project on how to safely plant and care for the trees and plants.

Except, simply planting a tree isn’t enough, you actually have to keep the area clear of invasives/and or plant and maintain other brush that would make it harder for invasives to take root.

The work done by HSBCBoB at Cooper’s Island is a prime example of this… there has been minimal upkeep and most of the trees planted there have been overrun by vines. (At least the last few times I’ve been there over a period of months.
