Ministry Recognizes Teacher Appreciation Week

May 6, 2015

In recognition of Teacher Appreciation Week, the Minister of Education, R. Wayne Scott and the Acting Commissioner of Education, Dr. Freddie Evans are recognizing the significant influence and sacrifice that teachers have, and make for students every day.

Minister Scott said, “There is an adage that says ‘if you can read, thank a teacher’. The teaching profession is the cornerstone of every profession.”

The Minister also took the opportunity to thank teachers for their warmth and compassion that they share with students.

In his letter to Bermuda public school teachers, Dr. Evans wrote, “On behalf of the Department of Education, I wish to thank you for all that you do for our students and to quote C. G. Jung, “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”

Teacher Appreciation Week was instituted by the National Education Association [NEA] in the United States. As stated on the NEA website, “Teachers give us so much. And though we know we can’t ever thank them enough, we can take a moment during National Teacher Week to share our appreciation for the special educators in our lives.”

Oddly enough…we had to teach our teachers proper English ad spoken in Bermuda….it was proper oxford English true…however when spoken here it is quite loud, boisterous and always ….always sprinkled properly with profanity…..dey didn’t know this…..so….we had to gettem hoonked on phonics….another technique utilised was to say the word often…then perplex the bejeebers out of them and see what happened….when spoken we cheered them on….enishally…..eenishally…this would confuse their perplexity…which “was” amusing but we had a job to do and contained our amusement…we had to….our teachers needed teaching….
