May 5, 2015

Along with parts of the UK realm across its Overseas Territories, Crown Dependencies and the UK itself, a beacon will be lit on Spanish Point Park on Friday 8th May to mark the 70th anniversary of victory in Europe.

“The Bermuda Regiment will be lighting the beacon, along with representatives from the Sea Cadets and the Bermuda Regiment junior leaders programme,” a spokesperson said. “The event is expected to take place from 7 – 8pm. The beacon should be visible from many places in the Great Sound.”

Governor George Fergusson stated, “I am pleased that Bermuda will be included in this, having played a most important role in the war effort.”

The UK Government website says, “Friday 8 May 2015 is the anniversary of VE Day [Victory in Europe Day], marking 70 years since the end of the second world war in Europe,” adding that “over 200 beacons will be lit on Friday 8 May to mark Victory in Europe Day.”
