Ana: First Named Storm Of 2015 Season Forms

The first named storm of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season has arrived, with Subtropical Storm Ana forming ahead of the ‘official’ beginning of hurricane season which is on June 1st.

The U.S. National Hurricane Centre in Miami said that Ana is carrying maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, and is located some 160 miles south-south-east of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.

According to the Bermuda Weather Service Ana is not a threat to Bermuda and it’s closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hours is forecast to be 662 nm to the west at 9am today [May 8].

Last hurricane season the island had the unique misfortune to be hit by two hurricanes back to back, with Fay slamming the island, followed shortly after by Gonzalo, with both storms causing widespread power outages and damage island wide.

According to the NHC, prior to the twin storms of 2014, the last time two hurricanes affected Bermuda within a 10-day period in 1899.

    Ooooooh, we can’t forget them last 2 hurricanes…Thank goodness we seem to be spared another so soon in the season.(That would be like having the,”dreamer team” re-elected in the City of Hamilton) Sad yes, but true!

    We still haven’t cleaned up the trees that were knocked down by the hurricanes last year or cut back on the ones that are overgrown. Lots of trees by wires. When will this be done or are we going to wait for the next storm to take care of the problem. Unfortunately, it will mean being without power for some. W&E needs to get their act together.

      W & E??? Home owners need to do their part as well, and NO I am not a W & E employee. I don’t understand as to how some think that the government are responsible for everything (and I mean whichever party is in power). This is your country as well, don’t be afraid to do your part. Take a break for heavens sake..
