May 12, 2015

St. George’s mayor Quinell Francis executed one of her first roles as mayor for the town today [May 12] when she swore in the eight Councillors that will sit on the Corporation of St. George’s.

Mayor Francis was elected in on May 7 defeating the incumbent Garth Rothwell by 101 votes. Sworn in at the Town Hall were Business Rate Payers Councillors Faith Bridges, Philip Seaman and Municipal Residents Councillors Elizabeth Christopher, Eakin McLaughlin, Calvin Bean, Anthony Richardson, Philip Anderson and Jamie Sapsford. The Councillor seats were uncontested in the recent election.

Recent changes made in the Municipalities Act saw a new electoral process put in place with Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy previously saying, “8 Councillor seats will be allocated to represent ratepayers and residents in proportions to correspond roughly to their respective populations in each municipality”.

The Minister said that Government “took the view that business ratepayers should have the right to representation of their interests” so amendments to the Municipalities Act 1923 were made. The positions of deputy mayor and alderman have been removed by the Act.

The swearing in was witnessed by St. George’s Town Manager Candy Foggo, St George’s MP Kenneth Bascome along with a few friends and family of the Councillors.
