Review: BMDS’ “Powerful” Sister Act Has It All

The cast of Sister Act, BMDS’s latest production, was met with a standing ovation following Wednesday [May 27] night’s opening performance. The musical is described as an “feel-amazing musical comedy” and this performance is no exception. Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, Sister Act will leave you breathless.

The musical is based on the popular 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who must hide out in a convent disguised as a nun after witnessing a murder. As Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris takes over the struggling choir and no one is ever the same.

Delores is portrayed by the talented Samantha Smith, who commands the stage with her amazing vocals and charm. Jon Brunson, as Eddie, is the loveable hero and Deborah Pharaoh Williams, depicts a great “straight man” as the conservative Mother Superior.

If you have been a fan of the theatre in Bermuda, you will recognize some familiar faces in this production; Alexander Rosati [as Curtis] and Paige Hallett [as Sister Mary Robert] who continue to deliver stellar performances year after year. Deborah Raat will leave you in stitches as the boisterous Sister Mary Patrick.

While this production is truly an ensemble cast with all actors working in perfect harmony [literally], there are moments where you are able to see each one shine individually, so pay close attention as there is always something subtle going on in the background.

So, what will you get from Sister Act? Lots of jokes, surprises at every turn, some hilarious cheesiness and amazing songs that will blow you away. If you aren’t having fun at this show, well, frankly you just aren’t trying.

Sister Act is now showing at The Daylesford Theatre until June 6 – tickets are available at www.ptix.bm.
