XL Catlin Seminar On International Arbitration

The Claims Department of XL Catlin’s Bermuda Insurance Operations will host a seminar today [May 13] featuring one of the UK’s top insurance Queen’s Counsel and arbitrators, Gavin Kealey, QC.

Mr. Kealey, who is Head of Chambers at 7 King’s Bench Walk in the UK, specializes in all areas of commercial law. He is acknowledged as a leading QC and for his considerable expertise in contentious litigation in court and international arbitrations – with particular emphasis on contractual disputes of all kinds, insurance/reinsurance, financial services and banking, commercial fraud, conflicts of laws, sports law, shipping and oil and gas, corporate/share valuations, and professional negligence. He is known for his meticulous preparation, incisive and effective examination of witnesses, team leadership, and complex legal argument at first instance and at all appellate levels.

He also regularly accepts appointments as arbitrator. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of JAMS International. As a result of his considerable international arbitration practice, he is familiar with New York, French, Colombian and Mexican law of contract and insurance. His many appearances as counsel in court and in arbitrations include Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, France, Holland, Dubai, Singapore and the US.

Mr. Kealey and Mina Matin, a senior attorney at Chadbourne & Parke LLP who is qualified as counsel in New York, California, Bermuda and England, and specializes in the technical aspects of the Bermuda Form, will lead the XL Catlin seminar titled Conversations on International Arbitration & The Bermuda Form. They will address a variety of topics of particular interest to Bermuda insurers ranging from specific issues arising under the Bermuda Form to the practical considerations of choosing an arbitration panel and running an arbitration. The event will include a session where brokers, underwriters and claims professionals attending will have the opportunity to present their particular arbitration questions/issues directly to Mr. Kealey and Ms Matin.

The event will take place at XL Catlin’s O’Hara House office, beginning with registration at 2:30 p.m. and the seminar starting at 3 p.m. followed by a networking reception.
