Simons Appointed: IOC Education Commission
The Bermuda Olympic Association [BOA] today announced that BOA President, Judy Simons, has been appointed a Member of the International Olympic Committee’s [IOC] Olympic Education Commission.
On 26 May 2015, IOC President Thomas Bach introduced widespread changes to the composition and functions of various IOC Commissions stemming from reforms adopted as part of the Olympic Agenda 2020.
Among the changes introduced was the splitting of the former Culture and Education Commission into separate Commissions: the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission; and the Olympic Education Commission. The latter is focused on Olympism in Action and the IOC’s Youth Strategy.
The changes also saw an increase in the number of women on the various IOC Commissions to 32%, an increase of 49% from 2013.
Mrs. Simons joins 17 other Members of the Education Commission, which is chaired by Philip Craven, MBE.
Mrs. Simons said, “I am honoured to have been appointed to the Olympic Education Commission. I look forward to working with my fellow Members as we work to advance the ideals of Olympism among the world’s youth.”
Mrs. Simons’ appointment to the Education Commission is her fourth international appointment since becoming President of the BOA in 2008.
