Roban: Provide Information On Gun Incidents

June 18, 2015

“The Progressive Labour Party was saddened again to hear the evidence of shots fired in Pembroke once again in the area of Inghams Vale,” Shadow Public Safety Minister Walter Roban said.

“This is in succession to a number of violent incidents which include a bank robbery and shots fired in the St. Monica’s Road area already reported over the past two weeks,” Mr Roban added.

“We repeat our call on the public to support and cooperate with the Police and provide any information and assistance that is necessary to apprehend who is responsible for these incidents.

“As we begin another beautiful summer period in Bermuda we all have to play a part in guaranteeing safety, security and peace in our island for all to benefit. We must heed the call of the Bermuda Police Service [BPS] and the Road Safety Council for us to slow down and to abide by the rules of the road.

“The recent sad passing of octogenarian, Mr. Leon Smith, following injuries from a road accident, is just one more death and accident we should not have. Deaths and accidents on our roads are looking more like an epidemic. This is the reason we stood earlier this year with the government and authorities to plead for more responsible use of the roads by everyone.

“The preservation of life and ensuring road safety as we move throughout this island is the responsibility of everyone who lives here and loves this island. The PLP calls on everyone to make a commitment to do their part with combatting all violence and unsafe use of our roads.”

why did you not call for this commitmemt when the plp wad im power? where were your solutons? please list the strategies you put in place to improve road safety. this is not by any means a new phenomenon

    • Oh right says:

Just shut your trap. Always talking s***

      • serengeti says:

Yeah, great point. That showed us all who has the better argument.

  2. Terry says:

Lets see what he says when it happens in Point Shares.
    Tuckers Town.
    Trimingham Hill.
    Farirylands.
    Jennings Land.
    Sousa Estates.
    Front Street Bars/Resturants.

    And other lighter areas.

    Irony.

  3. Paul Revere says:

So using your logic Mr. Deacon, its just business as usual huh?
It amazes me that someone who worked for the local press for so long, can be so one sided and blind in his thinking.
Other than the seatbelt law which was successfully put into place under the PLP, what else would you like to have seen. Speed bumps every 50 feet?
If people obeyed the rules of the road, there would be far less accidents and carnage on the roads.
The same goes for violence, CCTV cameras were installed under the PLP, but I guess you expect there to be a policeman on every neighborhood corner 24/7
Since you had and probably still have access as a reporter, why don’t you write an opinion piece for Bernews. I am sure it would be well received as long as its unbiased and factual.

    • Mildred Mellie says:

Enacting the seatbelt law was a positive move in road safety, but motorcycles still don’t have seatbelts. Why now I’d like to know. I’d like to know.

Its as if Government doesn’t care.

      • Paul Revere says:

Think about what you wrote for even a moment. Could you image being strapped down on a bike with nothing to protect you, like other road vehicles have, in an accident. There would be even more road carnage.
The main problem with cycles, is that too many people take chances/ risks and put other road users at risk at the same time.
People just need to slow down, plain n simple.
        Its not rocket science

        • serengeti says:

Well. That went way over someone’s head didn’t it.

      • Anbu says:

Seatbelts on bikes?! Are u serious?

      • Toodle-oo says:

People who can’t recognize humor , especially when it comes from someone with a user name based from a famous British satire comic strip character , should be reading and commenting on other forums , not this one .

    • Jeremy Deacon says:

My point is what happened in 14 years? There was plenty of time then to do something to try and fix the problems on our roads …. if I was still a reporter I would asking that question!

      • Paul Revere says:

So I take it, they weren’t any fatal accidents prior to the PLP being in power?

        http://bernews.com/2015/01/586-road-deaths-since-1962/

Have a look at this article on Bernews and you will see the numbers dating back to 1962, which I believe was way before the PLP came into Power.

So tell me again, what did the UBP do?

    • PBanks says:

Of course it’s still business as usual. Politicians put out canned press releases (with pretty much the same verbiage every single time), asking people to slow down, and people pretty much ignore them.

And this goes back to the previous administration. Yes, the PLP tried worthy initiatives such as the mandatory seatbelt law and the points/demerit system for licences, but as far as discouraging bad driving habits and encouraging good ones, neither political party has anything to be proud of in this regard.

Government leaders and the Police are the only groups that can put policy and enforcement into place. And they’ve been lacking in that capacity.

Regarding crime, yes there’s only so much the powers that be can do. The police appear to have worked on their public image in recent times, hopefully that will have a positive effect when it comes to the public reporting what they see and hear.

  4. Bda diva says:

Oh, shut up! We are all very well aware of the situation and would like the violence to stop, trust me. Leave the political posturing out of it! #captainobvious

  5. Mildred Mellie says:

And while we are at it we should change our driving to be on the right so we are like the rest of the world. We could make it voluntary for the first 12 months just like the seatbelt law.

But I don’t expect Government will do anything about it as usual.

This has to be sarcasm lol. At least i hope it is. Lmao

  6. Mildred Mellie says:

The Police could eliminate the gunshootings if they would just simply confiscate the bullets when people bring these guns in.

I mean a gun with no bullets is harmless right? It s a simple solution but I don’t expect they will do anything about it.

  7. serengeti says:

Roban is wringing his hands with ‘concern’ about shots fired and a bank robbery.

In other news today, the PLP wants the Governor to refuse to sign legislation that reforms the criminal law. The PLP objects to measures that make life a little less easy for accused criminals to get off.

And Roban will keep wringing his hands and say “someone should DO SOMETHING”.

    • Come Correct says:

Is this the same legislation that revokes our right to remain silent. If it is I’m behind them 100%.

      • Zevon says:

What sheeet. It does not “revoke” anyone’s right to remain silent. Are you listening to those PLP liars again?

You still have the right to temain silent. There is still a presumption of innocence, The burden of proof is still on the prosecution.

        • Come Correct says:

By my understanding you can be charged for not saying certain things. That isn’t the right to remain silent.

  8. Mildred Mellie says:

Also, I notice many accidents involve a vehicle hitting a wall. If Government simply took all these walls down this type of accident would stop immediately.

But I don’t expect government will do anything about it as usual.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

No Mildred the stationary walls are not the problem. It is the walls that are not playing fair. They are moving & people are colliding with them. It is the Planning Depts fault. Wall foundations are not strong enough to stop them from moving around. Same problem with BELCO’s utility poles. People keep colliding with them too.

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

Do the PLP sit down & discuss every week who is gong to be “concerned” with this or “appalled” at that, then figure out who is going to trot off to the press this time to get some face time over some silly topic?
