Bermuda’s Top 50 Twitter List For June 2015

July 6, 2015

The first Social Media Day celebration in Bermuda took place on June 30 at Muse Skybar. The event was kicked off with a word from Premier Michael Dunkley [@bdamilkman], which was also attended by senator Jeffery Baron [@SenatorBaron], Toastmasters and other Bermuda social media enthusiasts.

Both Premier Dunkley and Senator Baron acknowledged the importance of Social Media to the wider community and its how it has been humanized them as politicians.

Stephanie Lee [@bdasteph] deserves credit for taking the time to organize the event.

She told Bernews, “The purpose of this event was to acknowledge the impact and importance social media has to Bermuda, both from a business perspective and for personal communication. There’s hardly a person on the island without a cell phone or smart phone, which in turn is connected to a social media application, wither Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp or Snapchat.

“Last year when the island was affected by two major storms, back-to-back, we were able to communicate with family and friends, ensuring everyone was safe.

“From a business perspective, the world is shrinking. Bermuda can no longer pretend, let alone operate as though we are in a bubble of another world. Local businesses can now connect and connect, communicate, and engage with customers locally and international, using platforms like Twitter to answer customer queries, and Instagram to showcase the people behind the business.

“Though some may be adverse to its use, in order to operate on the same level as the rest of the world, we must adapt.”

Back to the Bermuda Top 50 Twitter List, there is one no entery — Walt E Bobs [@Walt_E_Bobs], who is a “fluffy Bermuda rescue cat with a penchant for BBQ and pizza.” The account is full of humor and a fun light-hearted look at life through the eyes of a cat.

There were no changes in the top 10 with former WWE champ and FOX commentator John Layfield remaining number one and gaining the most followers with 7,400 adds in June.

Others who had people think they were worth following included Webster Butler [+1300], Ledrew Fox [+1200], Bermuda Tourism Authority [+900], and Forbes journalist Clare O’Connor [+800].

The numbers for this report was taken on June 29.
