Emmy IsachsenCompanies in Bermuda are increasingly taking the welfare of their staff more seriously and implementing new health schemes, according to a newly appointed wellness coordinator.

Emmy Isachsen has been appointed by Colonial Medical to oversee wellness programmes for the firm’s clients, including the Virgin Pulse scheme.

She said: “Health and wellness has always been important, but currently companies are taking the subject more seriously. With obesity on the rise as well as diabetes and other chronic conditions, the need for healthy living increases.

“It is important to educate the public on healthy eating habits, appropriate amounts of exercise, and healthy lifestyles. I see this industry growing rapidly as companies are investing and creating successful wellness programmes to help their employees and families lead a healthier life.”

Before she moved to Bermuda, Ms Isachsen was involved in the wellness programmes for her previous company, Lifetime Athletic Club, which involved teaching staff members how to make the most of what was on offer.

Ms Isachsen added: “I feel my biggest challenge will be having the individual commitment of each participant. My goal is to continue to get to know colleagues, co-workers, clients and individuals and encourage them to participate in Colonial’s wellness programmes.

“I hope Bermuda will continue to see results and be excited to get involved with our wellness programme and partnership with Virgin Pulse.

“I plan to help keep clients and individuals accountable for making a change and to maintain a healthy active lifestyle. I hope that with Colonial’s Corporate Wellness Programme will make it easier to influence others to focus on a healthier way and help excite people to do better.

Colonial offers a comprehensive Corporate Wellness Programme, which includes biometric screenings, fitness, and exclusive access to the Virgin Pulse on-line wellness program.

All primary medical insured are eligible for a secure Virgin Pulse account whereby they can track their activity in the form of steps, measure their blood pressure and weight, and compete in wellbeing challenges.  A social network on the site allows for members to connect and obtain support from their colleagues.

To date, Colonial has over 500 members participating across 6 companies.  Since its launch in January 2014, members have been moving more, better managing their blood pressure and losing weight.

Insurance members may join the Programme here.
