Premier To Meet With Airline Reps, Attend Forum

July 8, 2015

The Cabinet Office advised that the Premier and Minister of National Security Michael Dunkley is travelling to the US and Canada this week to meet with airline representatives and to participate in the 2015 Toronto Global Forum, respectively.

Today [July 8] Premier Dunkley will meet with senior United Airlines executives in Chicago. The Premier will be joined by the Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Derrick Binns, Airport General Manager Aaron Adderley and Bermuda Tourism Authority CEO Bill Hanbury.

A Cabinet Office spokesperson said, “Bermuda would like to see United Airlines have a winter presence on the Island. Part of the aim of the meeting is to re-engage in conversation with United about reinstating winter flights – at the very least at a reduced schedule. Also the Bermuda delegation will discuss increasing airlift to the Island for the upcoming America’s Cup.”

Following Chicago, the Premier will travel to Toronto, where he will join fellow leaders, Dr. the Hon. Orlando Smith OBE, Premier of the British Virgin Islands, Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada and Michiel Eman, Prime Minister of Aruba, to participate in the Toronto Global Forum Pan American Edition.

The conference takes place July 8 – 10, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel under the general theme: Creating Opportunities in a Connected World.

Premier Dunkley, who is a panelist alongside Premier Smith, Prime Minister Mitchell and Prime Minister Eman, will discuss Bermuda’s role as a leading financial services destination; Bermuda’s contribution to worldwide industries such as shipping and aircraft registries; the importance of interconnectivity in a changing global landscape; and Bermuda’s most recent strides and aspirations in the area of energy reform.

Additionally, with the emergence of Cuba since its warming relations with US, the Premier will take the opportunity to share his views on Cuba’s role in the region, particularly in light of recent commentary expressed by the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association [CHTA].

The Toronto Global Forum is hosted by the International Economic Forum of the Americas [IEFA], an international organization founded in 1995, with the mission of promoting exchange and open dialogue on the major current economic issues.

The IEFA works in close collaboration with private companies and a wide variety of international organizations such as the OECD, IMF, OAS and World Bank Group, as well as various regional development banks.

Organized in collaboration with the City of Toronto, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada, and programmed to coincide with the Opening Ceremony of the 17th edition of the Pan-American Games, the 2015 Toronto Global Forum, will place special interest in discussing the role of the Americas in major decisions and reforms related to the current global economic context.

The Premier, who will be accompanied to Toronto by Dr. Binns, returns to the Island on Friday [July 10].

Good luck Premier Michael Dunkley and to all others, in accomplishing your goals…This is known as, “taking the bull by its horns” :-)

    • Onion juice says:

In days to come that is brewing in the news, the only thing he will have in his hands is bull s!@#.

    • hmmm2 says:

But if the PLP did it you would say otherwise wouldn’t you??

      I still clicked dislike.

      • Onion juice says:

All the noise you and your media made about cedar beams and a serious accusation like this and “can you hear the silence.”

  2. Edmund Spenser says:

Please remind United that if they had direct flights to Bermuda from Chicago it would be easier to make conections from the US West Coast and can increase the potentional market for people to come to Bermuda.
Currently when you travel to Bermuda from the west coast you need to overnight somewhere, which makes it very inconvenient.

    • Lois Frederick says:

United tried that as a weekly flight about 10 years ago. I flew it too. It obviously didn’t work financially for them and it ended after a couple of years. Just not enough demand to fill it.

  3. mixitup says:

I doubt this meeting with United will happen today..

  4. mumbojumbo says:

Thank you Michael, very much appreciated!…This lightens my load and eases my schedule considerably……It is heartening to know you are there to assist…

  5. Onion juice says:

After hearing the affidavit from McClean Ill leave the Island too.

    • Raymond Ray says:

If this man who claims to have so much evidence has such evidence, then why hasn’t he revealed it to the Courts and public? (as oppose to making accusation.)
That’s all they are until proof is laid upon the Judges bench. Don’t forget and remember, this individual is the same man who owes (if not mistaken)$18 million to the people of Bermuda for the Par-la-Ville car park :-( I’m not convinced he or anyone can produce any type of evidence to coincide / confirm his accusation…

      • Onion juice says:

Easy Norman, don’t blow a gasket.

        • Raymond Ray says:

@ Onion juice & others: I expect you and your likes to be all over me but, time will tell…And if I’m wrong then I’ll stand to be corrected. (A man’s innocent until proven guilty right?)

          • Onion juice says:

Like your were wrong when you endorsed Craig to be Premier when U.B.P were given the Government, Norman.

  6. Trulytruly says:

I hope the unprecedented 2 hour stoppage of United flights today didn’t stop the scheduled meeting. This important meeting is much appreciated and hope it achieves the desired goal.

  7. Terry says:

Years ago I was not a big fan of Mr. Dunkley.

Since he has taken the reigns of the OBA and his team is working with him to try to bring stability to good governance and finance I commend him.

One can only do so much with so much.

Now off to Greece to buy a house on 20 acres for $10,000…………………with no water, sewage or electricity .
    Go figure.

    Shalom.
