Students To Produce Video Games At Camp

In partnership with the Harrisburg University Summer Exploration Camp, the Department of Education has organized a summer Gaming Academy, with the programme designed for high school students interested in video games and the digital arts. Students will be grouped into teams, and each team will design, produce, and market a video game.

The Department said, “The Department of Education has organized a summer Gaming Academy this week at CedarBridge Academy in partnership with the Harrisburg University Summer Exploration Camp [Harrisburg, Pennsylvania].

“The summer Gaming Academy is an immersive experience designed for high school students interested in video games, interactive simulations, new media, and the digital arts.

“The summer Gaming Academy is an intensive program designed to introduce passionate young game designers and developers to the methods and processes used by professional game makers throughout the world.

“The program focuses on all aspects of the creative process from ideation to problem-solving to delivery. Students will develop skills and strategies to prepare them for a future in the digital media industry.

“This camp is an introductory opportunity for Bermuda’s students who are interested in registering to attend the 2016 Harrisburg University Summer Exploration Camp.

“The Harrisburg University Summer Exploratory camp is a Science and Technology Exploratory Camp exposing students to STEM related experiences such as gaming technology, exploring lego robotics, nanobiotechnology explorations and exploring entrepreneurship and innovation.”

The Department of Education’s Director of Academics, Dr. Llewellyn Simmons said, “The partnership with Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, with the Department has opened a window of opportunity for our teachers and students to explore and enhance their knowledge and skills in creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.

“This camp represents a further enrichment for our Gifted and Talented Enrichment Programme [GATE] at the senior school level under the leadership of Education Officer, Luann Wainwright-Dill.

“We are also pleased to have Mr. Neville Zuill of CedarBridge Academy accept this leadership opportunity and learn the methods of gaming in support of building leadership capacity to sustain future summer Gaming Academy camps that the Department of Education will hold.”

Mr. Neville Zuill, Technology and Physics teacher at CedarBridge attended a participatory observation of the gaming academy at Harrisburg University.

He, along with Harrisburg University Executive Director, Center for Advanced Technology at Harrisburg University Entertainment & Learning Technologies, Mr. Charles Palmer, is conducting the summer academy.

The focus of the Academy will be on game programming, game art creation, audio production, and level design. Students with skills in visual arts, story-telling, or programming will be grouped into balanced teams. Each team will design, produce, and market a video game.
