PLP Pleased With Movement At Morgan’s Point

August 25, 2015

“We are pleased to see that there seems to be movement on the Morgan’s Point project that will culminate in Phase one construction,” Shadow Tourism Minister Zane Desilva said.

“Bermudians are hurting for employment and the sooner the project takes off the better. We anticipate that there will be a significant number of jobs in the construction of this hotel on this site,” Mr Desilva said.

“We must be cognizant though, that it is as important, if not more, that the BTA and the Ministry of Tourism allocate the sufficient funding to market Bermuda as a destination to the rest of the world. A beautiful hotel is not worth much, if it is unoccupied.

“In this economy, it has been challenging to fill our current beds, so we hope that there is an active push in these areas to increase air arrivals and to put heads in the beds,” Mr Desilva continued.

America’s Cup 2017, with all of its merit, is a one off event, whereas these hotels must be able to sustain themselves for decades. The government has pledged a $165M guarantee for the Morgan’s Point project. We cannot let this guarantee be in vain.

“Therefore all stakeholders must work to ensure the money is well spent and that we have a first class hotel, with Bermudians employed at all levels, involved in the construction, delivery and running of the hotel.

“We pledge our support behind this project, with the hope that it plays a significant part in the restoration of Tourism as one of our major economic pillars.”

Morgan’s Point CEO Craig Christensen previously said, “We’re putting in an 84-room boutique hotel with the units going along the cliff side here with plunge pools. They are very large units, about 600 square feet for a standard room, 1,200 feet for a suite, and up to 3,000 feet for a presidential unit.

“Essentially, it’s very similar to Bermuda in terms of a cottage colony. We have a central clubhouse at this location which will have all the amenities and the restaurants, we have three restaurant areas, we’ve got beautiful pools down here on the edge and into the water.”

Mr. Christensen also said the planned marina will have 77 slips and can take up to about 120 Mediterranean-style megaboats.

Gosh but we’re lucky to have such advanced thinkers around to approve these things for us or they would never get done.

A gain lets not forget Daniels Head… What happened? where are the investors for this project of redevelopment.Tourist still awaiting update and looking forward to returning to the Resort THAT NO LONGER EXIST!!!!!IT was also much buzz and excitement and long leases ect.. Why do we believe anything anymore..We have already seen plans over the years for a number of failed projects..The reefs was renovated and what has been the result..I recall when Daniels Head was struggling they received recognition and they eventually closed down .. So much for compliments<..hey don't pay the BILL..Tourist enjoyed the upgraded campout at Daniels Head even though they were high priced, but still the owners are not able to meet their financial obligations to date..It has been 5 years and still no moves to fix this once unique Resort in Somerset that was buzzing with activities for a year befor starting to have financial woes.Main Problem ;FINANCES!!!!!None available..hmmmmmmmmmm crickets……….

So the PLP say today. What happened to their demands for low cost housing as part of the project? Oh, never mind, that was one of the resons a previous developer bailed on the project.

So, why the support now? Zane, remind us again what type of business you are in? You will have to compete honestly this time. Port Royal is across the road.

And then when they spend it…

    “why not on scholarships?”
    “why not on FA?”
    “why cutting back gov overtime?”
    “why not re-hiring gov employees?”
“why not on another TCD/police station/our pocket liners?”

  17. Benu Bird says:

“Progressive Labour Party” is an internationally used term for a socialist party. Do your research. The acronym “P.L.P.” is likewise used internationally, as is their colour green!
