August 19, 2015

The Highland Springs Junior Tournament got underway at Pomander Gate Tennis Club in Paget yesterday [Aug 18] and while the rain caused a delayed start, the action got underway in the early afternoon.

A spokesperson said, “Notable matches included a 6-0, 6-1 win by Daniel Phillips, a highly experienced junior tournament player over plucky opponent Matthew Way in the Boy’s 12 Singles.

“In the Boy’s 16 Singles, Ben Lines, the No. 3 seed, was forced to make a comeback in the third set tiebreak against Amir Thomas. Amir took a strong lead of 7-3 in the 10 point tiebreak before Ben steadied his groundstrokes and advanced without losing another point.

“In the Girl’s Open Round Robin, Imani Phillips achieved a close victory over Kaylah Ming 3–6, 6–3 and 11–9 in the 10 point tiebreaker. The ground strokes were of a high standard, hit with power and frequently exceeded 20 shot rallies.

“In the final set tiebreak Kaylah took the lead 8–6 but Imani fought back to 8 – 8. The score went to 9-9 before Imani managed to squeeze out the final two points.”
