Education Parent Council Information Sessions

September 14, 2015

The Ministry of Education will hold information sessions with PTAs starting this week regarding the establishment of new Parent Councils for maintained primary and middle schools.

A spokesperson said, “The information sessions will provide parents with a greater understanding of the Education Parent Council Rules 2015 that went into effect on Tuesday, September 8th 2015. During the information sessions, parents will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the establishment of Parent Councils.

Since the Parent Councils will not replace PTAs, parents will be able to use the acquired information to start thinking about whether they would like to establish a Parent Council for their children’s school.

“Parent Councils are advisory bodies with specific responsibilities focused on getting parents involved in student achievement and school improvement. Both Parent Councils and PTAs will have the common goal of improving overall parental involvement for student success.

“All parents are urged to attend the information sessions that will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the following days:

  • Wednesday September 16th, 2015 at Francis Patton Primary School,
  • Thursday September 17th, 2015 at Prospect Primary School; and
  • Wednesday September 23rd, 2015 at Port Royal Primary School.

“All PTAs are invited to attend any session. Topics such as what parent councils are, their benefits, how they are to be established, the difference between parent councils and PTAs, as well as their responsibilities will be covered at the information sessions.

“The Ministry of Education will also be holding workshops to help interested parents collaborate and work together with their school principals on how to establish parent councils.”
