Gloucester: “Jonte Smith Was A Bright Spark”

September 23, 2015

Gloucester_City_AFC_logoAfter recently signing with Gloucester City Football Club, Bermudian striker Jonte Smith made his debut with the club in their match against Gainsborough, with the club calling him a “bright spark” and Gloucester’s “playmaker.”

The club’s match report said, “Gloucester started well as James Bowen played a picture perfect ball into the six yard box towards Obi Anoruo but the Tigers hitman was barely offside.

“The first chance for the visitors was a good one as Marc Newsham found himself in space on the edge of the box but he scuffed his shot wide.

“Gainsborough had the lead after Nathan Jarman collected the ball on the edge of the area and curled a sumptuous effort into the far corner that left Jasbir Singh with absolutely no chance.

“Trinity had a second and it was birthday boy Jarman again. City switched off as they looked for a free kick but the referee was having none of it and Jarman was the only one to react as he latched onto it and rifled the ball fiercely past Singh.

“City had a fantastic opportunity to get one back before half time as James Bowen headed the ball back across goal and Joe Parker reacted quickest but couldn’t quite get there to tap home from close range.

“The Tigers knew they had to get an early goal and they nearly had it, but Obi Anoruo was too hesitant and had a shot blocked, before James Bowen with the follow up was also blocked.

“New signing Jonté Smith played a lovely one-two with Sam Avery down the wing who then played a driven low cross to Anoruo who flicked it over from close range.

“Smith was then gifted the ball 25 yards from the Trinity goal and was allowed time to pick a shot but despite sending Budtz sprawling to his right, the Gainsborough stopper always had it covered and saw it wide.

“With the time running out swiftly, Avery played another low ball to Anoruo who just slipped as he took a shot and Adam Quinn did really well to get the block in.

“Jonté Smith was a bright spark amongst few and he continued to be Gloucester’s playmaker as he knocked the ball down to Anoruo 12 yards out from goal but again his effort was deflected over.”
