Premier Attends Events In New York, Washington

September 18, 2015

During Premier Michael Dunkley’s visit to the US this week he participated in the New York launch of the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s [BTA] “Race to Bermuda” event on Wednesday, and attended events in Washington DC last night [Sept. 17] as part of the 45th Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual Legislative Conference.

A Cabinet Office spokesperson said, “Bermuda’s participation at the CBC events was made possible with the assistance of Bermuda’s Washington DC Office as well as the assistance of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers [ABIR] and their President, Bradley Kading.

“The public will recall that Premier Dunkley visited Washington DC in February this year with a view of strengthening Bermuda’s relationship with the United States.

“While there, he met with key decision makers and leading legislators on Capitol Hill, such as Congressman James Clyburn [D-SC], Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, ‎Congressman Charles Rangel [D-NY]‎, Congressman G.K. Butterfield [D-NC], Democratic Minority Leader and long serving Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Senior Democratic Senator from New York, Chuck Schumer‎, among others.

“This week’s visit to DC served as a follow on to further the relationships built.

“Last evening as part of the CBC events, Premier Dunkley attended an event honouring Congressman Clyburn of South Carolina, the number three Democrat in the House of Representatives. Congressman Clyburn, during his remarks, acknowledged with thanks the presence of Premier Dunkley and expressed appreciation for the friendship they have developed.

“While there, the Premier also had an opportunity to speak with Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, who he met earlier this year on Capitol Hill.

“Later in the evening, Premier Dunkley attended the Leaders’ Reception in honour of the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina.

“Congressman Butterfield, while acknowledging Premier Dunkley to the invited guests, made special note of his paternal ancestry relationships with Bermuda and his frequent visits to the Island.

“Also while at Congressman Butterfield’s event, the Premier had an opportunity to meet with US Attorney-General Loretta E. Lynch. Premier Dunkley also chatted with Ambassador Diane Watson, former Representative from California, who he’s previously met, as she is a frequent visitor to Bermuda.

“The evening concluded with attendance at the 45th Annual Legislative Conference Gospel Extravaganza, held at the United House of Prayer for All People. This event was co-hosted by Congressman Clyburn, Congressman Butterfield, Congressman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi and Congressman Sanford Bishop of Georgia.

“The concert served as a celebration of thanksgiving, with each Congressman introducing a Gospel Choir from his Congressional District.

“The Premier who was accompanied to the CBC events by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Derrick Binns and Cheryl Packwood, Director of Bermuda’s Washington DC Office, returns to Bermuda today.”

He is hoping that his minister of foreign employment procurement in the Senate been the point man for his OBA government policies will some how obscure his role as government leader in the putting forward of these anti-Bermudian policies which has increasingly seen his OBA government under siege by the people of Bermuda. In that respect no matter how many photo-ops he takes; this will not save him and his government from being consign into political obscurity come the next election.
